President Bush to visit Eielson on Monday

FAIRBANKS -- President Bush will visit the Fairbanks area on Monday, according to an announcement issued today by the White House. He will speak to troops at Eielson Air Force Base.
The Richardson Highway alongside Eielson Air Force Base will be closed from 3:35 to 4:35 p.m. and again from 5:55 to 6:20 p.m. for security purposes during President Bush’s visit.
Bush will be passing through Alaska on a trip to the Far East that includes stops in South Korea, Thailand and three days at the Olympics in Beijing, China.
Air Force One, carrying Bush, will be making a refueling stop at Eielson.
Bush will be accompanied by his wife and will remain at Eielson for two hours. He has no events scheduled outside of the base, said Eielson Lt. Frank Hartnett, spokesman for Eielson.
Fort Wainwright personnel have been invited to Eielson to hear the president, who is expected to speak about military matters. Alaska politicians have also been invited, but Hartnett did not know yet who among them plans to attend.

Curious to stop at Eielson instead of Elmendorf. I hope the president gets to see some of Alaska, and that the weather clears up for his visit.
This is bizarre...
We arrived in Fairbanks just days before Reagan and the Pope met in Fairbanks. Here it is, 24-years later, we're pulling out of Alaska and Bush shows up just before we depart. That's full circle!
I bet it will be pouring rain, just like it was in April of '84.
Huh.... First, we're visited by disastrous rains and now we're going to be visited by a disastrous president. As if we don't have enough trouble already!
Eielson has some high-tech stuff, don't let him touch anything!
All of you Bush bashing loud mouth folks that have been posting on here, this is your big chance to tell the President of the United States just how you feel about him. Or mabe you alligator mouths have overloaded your tweetie bird butts. Especially the Knucklehead who thought it was cute to wish ill will to Mr. Bush.
Last photo op for local politicians before election time. Wonder if Ted Stevens will show up.
Thanks, KSFLATLANDER, you really told them!
Good job standing up for Bush, a president with, as one historian stated, "the paranoia of Nixon, the ethics of Harding and the good sense of Herbert Hoover."
I don't have the stomach to get into this administration's disgusting abuse of power in a disastrous war, which certainly tops my list of reasons why I'm glad to see Bush go. His failed response to natural disasters and climate change issues are reason enough for patriots to dissent, and I hope that a number of them do next Monday.
kenwoods-Use your enormous brain power that you think you have. You like hiding on the web but have no backbone to back up your hate.
Yep, KSflatearther's posts invariably display his Herculean intellect!
No civilians will be allowed anywhere NEAR dubya, I'm sure.
Luckily, you don't have to be near him to dissent - stage a rally somewhere public? :)
newsreader-Mabe you could buddy-up with sdoownek and hold up signs and scream insults as the President goes by, much like you do on here.
Ooo! I'll bring the megaphones and the american flag confetti!
I wonder if the Pres. will stop at the "BIG I" for old times sake.
Right-On AKNATUFF- I learned a long time ago, back in 1967, to respectfully salute the rank a person carries on their shoulders and you can't get any higher in rank than the President. Mabe some of you should enlist and find out first hand what it means to serve a country that's filled with hate.
There are plenty of people who serve (or have served) in our armed forces who disagree with decisions the current administration has made.
Hey, maybe we can get a sound bite for our flood like New Orleans did for Katrina. . . Maybe something inane like "you're doin' a heck of a job, Strleee!"
Name One?
i wonduh if g.i. bush is gonna fwry in, in a big fast ay-r-prane, and den land to a frong of adoring fwag-waving peoples and a mission accomprished bannuh. dat wud be so wrad! huway! to da gray-test special prez-uh-dent dere eveh was! he protect us frum dah turrists!
Well, how about a number of the people who are part of this organization: http://www.veteransforpeace.org/
patcaribou-Take your foot out of your mouth and you'll be able to enunciate your words better.
Got some news for ya, AKN...our military is NOT fighting for our country in Iraq. They are fighting in the context of an illegal, unnecessary INVASION. Had they been sent to Afghanistan after 9/11, they would have bin Laden in custody by now, and our country would not be in quite the mess it is today. Don't start with the "support our troops" either....I do. They are puppets, whose patriotism, dedication, devotion, selflessness, hearts and LIVES are being wasted on the greed and corruption of old men with ulterior motives.
As for bush**'s visit...well I'm certain that sdoownek and newsreader would not be alone on the side of the road booing the man who, if justice was served, would not be allowed to leave the office of the President with any honor. They would be flanked by many, many angry, disillusioned, struggling folks who are just glad to be seeing him GO!!!
Peace
akblugirl- I would ask you, what country does our military serve? You spill out so much dribble about support for our troops and in the same breath call them puppets. You end with the word Peace. You have no idea what the price of peace has cost this nation. And I "will" start with the Support Our Troops, because you and many more are just giving them lip service.
Flatlander, thanks for standing up. I'm sure most of these libs would be singing the same toon even if al gore or john kerry were president. Although I don't agree with everything Pres Bush has done I voted for him twice, and I know the country is better because of the job he has done.
Funny how many bash just our president, when there are probably many who contributed to where we are today. I bet any other president in power, there would be some other decision the country would hate about them as well. Same story, different person. Nothing's going to change.
akbru
how day-uh you! you shud be watuh-boded fuh yuhr diswehspeckful ranting. typical breeding hart wribrul. donut you know dat we had to fight da iswamic fascists over dere so we donut have to fight dem over here? geuge bush, he wrearry wrearry smart man and he gonna wrock all you treasonous ribruls up!
akblugirl- I don't see how you could come out of your mouth and bad talk the troops. How dare you call them puppets and talk about their patriotism. I strongly doubt that you would ever to be able to do what they do. Or withstand the negative talk from people who's freedoms they are fighting for. I would assume that you would be one of those sad people.
I'd vote for W again! Democrats have controlled everything in recent history and nothing has been done other than point fingers. Typical of the type. If I weren't on the slope getting this horrible black stuff out of the ground for the subaru driving idiots that don't realize they can't survive without it, I'd be heading to Eielson to see the President's last visit to Alaska as Commander in Chief. Best wishes to you lemmings!
i hope dat wen bush in china, he go to american frag factory...and maybe to a war-mart factory too? i hear war-mart not wike obama...war-mart tell managers too vote against dat man cuz den dah unions mite twy to unionize da wuhkers...why wud da wuhkers wanna unionize anyway? days unions isa bunch a communiss's.
Good that Bush is going to make it up to Fairbanks before his term is over. He hasn't been a perfect president, but he has been a good president for our time. He will be known for aggressively defending this nation after 9/11. The move into Afghanistan and Iraq to persue and attract Al Queda was Bin Laden's worse nightmare. The elimenation of Sadamm and his henchmen, and the liberation of the Shiites highlight that effort, and offer hope that the Middle East will some day be a land of civilized people. Imagine if Gore would have been President. He would have figured out a way to send lawyers instead of the Marines.
Let's not forget that had Clinton been worth anything Bin Laden would already be dead from a hellfire missile from an UAV. Several terrorist attacks during his administration and all he could muster is to send a few cruise missiles into the desert. That will show them!!
I have never in my life been more ashamed of the people in the United States. Respect has been lost for so many of the things we hold dear. Respect for our Government, it's leaders, for Fathers and Mothers, Children, respect for life and personal property. Blame is being laid at the doorstep of the president but it should be at the doorstep of every American not teaching Respect to our children. The Pledge of Allegiance has but a few words. The one word everyone fights about is God. What about the word Allegiance or Indivisible. Look these two words up and find out where you stand.
"if justice was served, would not be allowed to leave the office of the President with any honor"
He has already lost it in my book. I agree completely with akblugirl.
I'm hoping that the runway will washout!!! Then maybe he can land somewhere else before going to hang out with his communist buddies in China during the Olympics.
i hope dat he will where dat pi-wot uniform...dat codpiece is reary good...it reary accentuates, to da enemies, who carries da "biggest stick" so-two speak.
ksflatlander, It took you until 1967 to honor the FLAG and YOUR country. WOW, WHEN YOU GROW UP MAYBE I'LL LISTEN TO YOUR SMART MOUTH. Until then, gives us OLD FOLKS A BREAK, IT MUST BE PAST YOUR BED TIME....
A gathering that takes place in such a way as to not block the traffic, and not block pedestrians, on the side of the Richardson Hwy, might be legal, depending on any laws governing foot traffic in that area of the highway, if any exist. There's a right-of-way through there, to either side of the highway, that's questionably under the DoD's control, but the control-minded folks in D.C. have been quick to label nearly anything that defames Shrub as a 'security threat.'
At a bare minimum, it could be another opportunity to probe just how much damage has been done to the 1st Amendment.
I think that Monday might be a great day for a road-side picnic, complete with detailed, all-inclusive listings of the Chimp's criminal actions, infractions against the Bill of Rights, etc. There's not much going on at the fair that day, and the weather might even improve. I've got an amplified bull horn if one's needed.
Thanks for the idea Flatlander!!
Perhaps AKNATUFF could even make a cameo appearance, just long enough to point toward HIS path out of the state... Maybe he and Shrub could travel that road together. I'm thinking that they'd both enjoy the decorum at the Chinese Olympics.. sharing similar principles, and all.. ;^>)
I would rather Bush stay here and we put all of the liberals on the plane and send them to China... Maybe after they live in a communist country for a while they would appreciate what they had here under a president who wasn’t scared to act.
>I have never in my life been more ashamed of the people in the United States
Gee Flat Lander, I think you were born in the wrong place at the wrong time. I think you would have been much happier in say, 1936 and in Berlin. Now there was a regime that KNEW something about patriotism! Yes sir, no flag burning Jesus hating commie liberals would dare stage a demonstration, or talk down the SS.. They would find themselves with a bullet in the brain pan lickity split! Yep you would have been much happier there...
Roofman-could you inumerate the ways that our country is better for the eight years Bush has been in office? I'm just curious as to what you consider better to be...
marlowmill-You read about as good as you write. I went in the army in 1967 and learned about rank. I had been reciting the Pledge of Allegiance in scool long before that. Put your glasses on.
Dirk-Like I thought, you're part of why I'm ashamed of our people.
KSFLATLANDER, i actually agree with you. respect is a thing of the past...i think they should start teaching it the classrooms of children. because apparently parents these days forget what the word means in how they're raising youngsters. in 20 years this world is going to be a scary place.
I don't think that there is anything wrong with Flatlander being ashamed of the people in the United States. I am ashamed of a majority of them too. Sad individuals
You're right Flatlander.
There never was any history of standing up to abuse of authority in this country. Individualism, free speech, and the Bill of Rights are the -real- cancers.
Capitulation and conformity are the attributes that traditionally made America great. It was all of those folks who were willing to go along with what ever they were told that got things done, right?
Glad to know how well you understand your United States history.
Glad to know that I could increase your sense of malaise today, Flatlander. And equally glad that you're nolonger among us.
Maybe you and that puppy-kicking Atwood fella' could hang out together and rewrite some more of our history??
Big deal Bush is stopping at eilson wooo hooo.
He takes the time to actually get out and visit people in other states but not Alaskans. We arent that important anyway I guess. The military will be blessed with his presence but us alaskans can kiss his a ss I guess.
Being ashamed of your fellow countrymen does not necessarily make you unpatriotic. The American revolution was started by a minority who had the guts to stand up against the government. The true patriots stand for what's right, not for unquestioned obedience.
This administration has taken away our rights one by one, and believe me I'm no left-winger. The party we put into office failed to uphold its promises. In 2000 Bush campaigned AGAINST warmongering. He has sliced away slowly at the Bill of Rights. The man is no conservative. Unfortunately, there is no conservative in the main 2008 party race either.
Guess I'll have to "throw away my vote" on a 3rd party candidate.
WOW. Talk about lemmings!
Let’s see now…..
KSF, our military SHOULD be serving OUR country, preserving OUR freedoms, but tell me….exactly what threats to the USA did Sadaam and Iraq pose? There weren’t even any WMDs! It was well known that bin Laden, the choreographer of the 9/11 attacks, was in Afghanistan. That’s where our troops should have been sent. Period. The invasion of Iraq was nothing more than a smoke screen, a pre-planned atrocity in it’s own right that had nothing whatsoever to do with the attack on our land.
I believe that our GI s have all the courage and patriotism in the world in their hearts. They have been told to go to the middle east and do a job they have been trained to do, and they are eager to do so. I support that spirit. I do not support the waste of their lives.
I am old enough to know very well the price paid for the freedoms we enjoy.
Peace? It’s a dream, not a reality.
I’d very much like to know how we are “better” for the job GWB has done, roofman.
UAFgrad…no president in US history has ever had a lower approval rating than G…no president in US history has ever been so disdained by so many, around the world.
Entrigued…I have not “bad-talked” the troops. Calling them puppets, (may I add innocent puppets) infers nothing negative. Picture each and every one of them with strings attached to their arms. They are taken from wherever they did their basic training and sent “over there” for x number of months. X number of months later, and they’re still there ….. sorry, people. They may or may not be given some r and r, and bam! they’re back “over there” for another extra, extended, x number of months. Years, for some. You’re right though, I couldn’t/wouldn’t do the job they’re doing.
Know though, that the freedoms we enjoy were won many years ago during real wars with real threats attached. These troops are fighting for various reasons, none of them valid.
YellowRiver…W has not been a good president in any way, shape or form. He will be known for deceiving the American people and using Iraq as a transparent ploy to make billions of dollars for his cronies, as well as many other reasons, none of them worth the resultant death and destruction . He will be known for “squandering” one of the largest financial surpluses this nation has ever had.
Malcontent…I’m not a big fan of slickbill, either.
KSF…I agree with you about the loss of respect for things that should be held highly…but I happen to be a mother, grandmother who has taught many of the same values and mores that I was taught in the 50’s. However, respect must most often be earned. The administration that exists in DC has lost any respect it should have tried to foster and cherish and deserve.
Peace
akblugirl
you just said everything i was thinking.
Did anyone invite him to the fair?
Did anyone invite him to the Fair?
RIGHT ON AKBLUGIRL, RIGHT ON!
How soon we forget our Gov't classes. True power lies in the senate and congress. If you are tired of the bs in Washington, you need to change your Senator or Congress person. The President has very little power compared to them. It's easy to forget though. So on Nov, 4th don't forget and do something about it. The President is just a figure head. By the way get ready Fairbanks because the Arrogant Texan is moving there in September and believe me Fairbanks will never be the same!! Go Cowboys!!!

It will all be over in January. That is the beauty of the American system, you can have a turn over of the presidential leadership every 4 or 8 years without ever shedding a drop of blood. There is an advantage to term limits, maybe it should be applied to Senators and House Reps.
Hey just in time for the 5 week vacation in congress!
akblugirl-Respect is a tricky word. It is also a two way street. In order to have respect for others you must start with yourself. When you teach your children, grandchildren, disrespect for the Highest Office this country has, they will learn just that, disrespect for everything. The object of my comments today was to try to get at least some people thinking in a New, Old, way. Learn from mistakes and build a better tomorrow. Teach your children well.
heck with Bush, they passed AGIA in the Senate.
KSF~ I have not taught disrespect for the "Highest Office this country has"....but I have taught to "Question Authority".
Peace
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!
LOL, Distant Thunder!
Politics do make strange bedfellows.
http://www.raptureready.com/rap2.html
AKNATUFF - The word is RIGHT, not RITE. Rite means some sort of religious or ceremonial practice. (Taking communion is a rite). Right means a correct judgment or answer, the right to do something, your right hand etc.
I agree with akblugirl also. For anyone that gets upset over the use of the word "puppet", calm down, it's exactaly what they are. The soldiers make important day to day decisions that have to with the life safety of their troops and the overall success of their individual mission. However, their overall actions are being completely controlled by the government.
That is the whole premise of how the military works, in every country, not just the US.
Amazing looking over all of the above comments. Folks like flatlander need to have the flag flying on their sleeves, and a litmus test for all Americans for patriotism. Remarkable that people can go through the school system and live in this country without understanding it's basic principles. "Dissent is the highest form of patriotism." Not MoveOn.org, but Jefferson. We all have not only a right but responsibility to criticize our government, and to do whatever it takes to make it better. Unfortunately with the corruption and transfer of wealth and power over the last two Bush terms, likely the only way is anarchy. But maybe not. Either way, I love my country, distrust my government, and all who tell me to love-it-or-leave-it can go to hell.
All I'm going to say is please be mindful that when posting, there are those of us that are active duty families and no matter where my husband is sent around the world for whatever cause, it's to protect your rights to say what you do.
It's hurtful to read such comments as this:
"They are puppets, whose patriotism, dedication, devotion, selflessness, hearts and LIVES are being wasted on the greed and corruption of old men with ulterior motives."
Think of my 2 children who are about to say good-bye to their dad once again shortly. Would you really tell them their dad is a puppet?
Just FYI - we're stationed at Eielson. And you're very welcome.
flatlander - There is a difference between teaching respect for an office and respect for a person. I respect the office of president, if I am unhappy I'm going to follow the proper channels and what not. As far as respecting the person though........that is a lot to ask for in this case.
akblugirl,
Questioning authority for the mere sake of it is as bad as obeying it without question. There is a balance that must be met. Undue questioning leads to the inability for anything to get done. Lack of questioning leads to abuse of power by those of authority. Just make sure that in your absolute questioning of authority that you don't do more damage than the authority you question.
FreeDarfur
You hit the nail on the head! Term limits for everyone.
>It will all be over in January.
This thing wont be over at all in January. The mess that Bush left us in a wrecked economy, civil rights taken back 100 years, accepted torture, invasion of other countries and then sending them the bill will be with us for a long time to come. Pretty much you name it, the man was a bull in the china shop of freedom on the planet. The next president, R or D will inherit a major disaster. The Bush legacy is much like a very bad renter who after 8 years trashing the place and not paying the rent will hand over to the next renter a house in shambles. In a way I hope the republicians keep control. It will give us another 4 years of going down the toilet to drive that final nail in their Contract with America crap and send them deep into the minority for the next quarter century. There are still too many flatlanders out there at this time who still believe the world is flat and the greatest, and only country of importance on this flat world is the USA. Most meaningful change comes at a cost, so maybe we will finally learn the lessons of letting capitalism go unbridled.
Mamabear-I wish for the safe return of your family members once they have completed their tour. May providence keep them safe. A very good friend of mine is shipping out today for Iraq, and no matter the personal beliefs anyone has about the war itself, we should all hope and pray for their safety. They are true heroes who give selflessly of themselves, sometimes ALL of themselves, to protect our right to live free and have any opinion we wish. I salute them all! Hurry home, Sean, and keep your head down.
I wonder if the Pres. will stop at the "BIG I" for old times sake.

woodman.... were you in Fairbanks 1974 ??
I could write volumes about what I saw and experienced in Fairbanks 1974, but for the sake of my own skin I'll wait until I read a certain someones obit.

akblugirl- I for one am not a puppet and I do not have strings hanging off of me anywhere. So when you talk negatively you should really think of what you are saying. I don't care if you call us innocent or not. I am glad that you are not serving next to me, I wouldn't want you next to me in a war. Whether here in the US or abroad. And for your information we are not taken from whatever we do in basic training and over there. Get some research and present me with some facts before you open your mouth again. The so called freedoms that were won many years ago so that you run your mouth now were fought by soldiers. You didn't win anything, you inherited it. If you don't know what WE the Soldiers are fighting for then maybe you should stop and ask us.
akblugirl:

Raytech63, Apparently you missed the unilateral decisions that were enacted via the DoJ and the NSA, as well as the impact/implications of Shrub's unconstitutional 'signing statements.'
Yes, in theory, Congress controls the proverbial reigns. Someone should tell the Shrub that at least once a week, 'cause he seems to forget that point quite regularly.
-----------------------------------
Flatlander, here's a Teddy Roosevelt quote, from an opinion piece that he had published in a newspaper in your neck of the woods.... during WWI, I might add..
"The President is merely the most important among a large number of public servants. He should be supported or opposed exactly to the degree which is warranted by his good conduct or bad conduct, his efficiency or inefficiency in rendering loyal, able, and disinterested service to the Nation as a whole. Therefore it is absolutely necessary that there should be full liberty to tell the truth about his acts, and this means that it is exactly necessary to blame him when he does wrong as to praise him when he does right. Any other attitude in an American citizen is both base and servile. To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public. Nothing but the truth should be spoken about him or any one else. But it is even more important to tell the truth, pleasant or unpleasant, about him than about any one else."
"Roosevelt in the Kansas City Star", 149
May 7, 1918
According to your re-written version of American history, perhaps even Teddy Roosevelt was a shameful, unpatriotic, 'librul,' lacking in real manhood..
The neo-con masses spouting their of blind allegiance make me chuckle so hard that it hurts sometimes..
sdoownek- How dare you call anyone a puppet. You don't know the life that woman lives. So I would suggest you sit down somewhere.
Thank you Darth, it's much appreciated :)
And thank you as well entrigued :) I asked them to remove his disgusting, ignorant, name-calling comment towards me, and they agreed.
Was sdoownek's comment removed because he used the word "puppet", which it has been made clear is not being used in a disrespectful or defamatory way?
Entrigued: I assume you are in the Service. You are therefore a puppet of this government. I'll explain:
You (or other Servicemen) were sent overseas to invade Iraq, in the name of locating and destroying the supposed WMDs and other reasons.
You did not make the decision to go. You went when told, did so (I presume) nobly and with all your heart. You did your level-best to make America look good, fight good, and win what you were told was an important battle.
However, your sacrifice (and the greater sacrifices of those killed and wounded) was unfortunatly in vain. There were no WMDs. There were no terrorists. There was no need to invade Iraq. You were used. You were lied to. You were taken advantage of. Your respect and belief in the greatness of this country were leveraged to make you dismantle and destroy a sovereign nation and turn it into civil war.
That is why you are a puppet. It does not make your devotion to this country any less. It does not take away from the good that you tried to do. It does not take away from the sacrifices made by the thousands who will not return. It should make those who continue to preach of the glory of this war ashamed of themselves. It should cause President Bush to be impeached like the criminal he is.
You and your fellow servicemen are to be praised, at least, by anyone who understands this country's history. Your (and our) leaders are to be reviled.
Henry~ Thank you for making that point so succinct...I'm becoming so frustrated about this exchange...moreso now that I know that a post has been removed that shouldn't have been! sdoownek said just what both you and I have said, merely using bolder words, basically....
Dirk- Why don't you put your own life under a micrscope and allow millions of bull-headed, disrespectful, unpatriotic nitwits to examine your life. How would you look after eight years? There's no need to answer because no matter how many people are sitting, there's always a lot more standing. I stand up for America and believe in our way of life. You can believe anything you like. I'm just glad I don't live next door to you.
President Bush is still our Commander in Chief of the greatest country in the world.
He deserves the highest respect for the office he holds.
Who are you naysayers going to bash come next year?
Henry: I would completely have to disagree with you. I did not go over to Iraq to find Weapons of Mass Destruction. I went over there to do a job that I do here in the states. I am not a puppet as you would say. I choose to do the job that I do. Not all services are the same, and when my time comes to go again I will go. My husband and I choose our paths. I appreciate your point of view because you gave knowledge as to why you see us as puppets, but I still disagree with you. Yes I have lost friends and people that I considered family and I have been attacked, but I still wear my uniform with pride. Now to some the loss of their lives was in vain, but that comes with us signing the paper. I was no lied to and I was not used. I went to over there knowing what I was going to be doing there and what I would face everyday. So Henry I just guess that you have your opinion and I have mine.
akblugirl: Neither you nor anyone else can Call that woman a puppet. You haven't earned the right to do so. And like she said you are more than welcome to come here and say that to the many soldiers and families on the base.
entrigued~ It just so happens that I spent 4 miserable years as an Army wife. I have actually earned that right.
Peace
I'm goingt to agree with Henry on this one. Well said. No one in this country that I've ever met is against the soldiers themselves that's just insane. What I am against is the people are sending them over there and the reasons behind it.
This whole thing sort of seems like political farming. People are are for the war will say things like "Support our Troops!" Which implies that if you are against the war you must automatically be against our troops. It's the same thing with the abortion debate. People use the term pro-life and it implies that if you are against them you must be pro-death, which is of course also insane.
akblugirl: sorry to hear that your couldn't tuff it out
Ladd, that's debatable. Ever heard of China... or India?
My two cents.
I support Bush because ......
1998 - Madeline Albright : Rogue state (Iraq) will use nuclear and chemical or biological weapons against us, a gretest threat which we must and will stand firm.
1998 - Bill Clinton : we have given Saddam many opportunities to develope programs for weapons of mass destruction and continue to ignore solid commitments that Sadam made.
1998: Howard Dean: International outlaws = Iran and Iraq
1998: Sandy Berger: Feb 1998 Saddam will re-build his arsenal again and will use it again like he did 10x since 1983.
2002: Nancy Peolosi: (Meet the press 11-17-02) Saddam Hussein certainly has chemical and biological weapons.
2002: Jay Rockefeller on the senate floor: There is unmistakable evidence that S.H. is working aggressively to develop nucelar weapons.
I could go on.. but, nuff said. The start of the war was quick and it ended quickly, but it wasn't fulfilled mainly because of two reasons. To create a representative govt in iraq, and at the same time disband the Sunni's (army of the country).
The instability of that country led to civil war amongst their own people resulting in an occupation of our troops to maintain and stop the "ethnic cleansing" the Sunni's were imposing on the Shiites. Opportunistic Al-Qaida and Iran came in and caused havoc. Al-Qaida realising they couldn't win, they started sectarian wars inside against shiite arabs, and sunni arabs.
Iran came in when ethnic cleansing began, this was their opportunity. yadda yadda yadda. You can all come to your own conclusions.
Trust me, Flatlander, Teddy and I feel mutually about your not being our neighbor as well.
My life has been under scrutiny... many times. But then, I haven't invaded other countries based on false pretenses, violated international laws and treaties, worked dilligently at obliterating some of the most meaningful aspects of the Bill of Rights, or attempted to silence those who disagree with me by creating 'free speech zones' far away from main street. Certainly not in the ways that your hero GW has.
Apparently there's a lot of folks who believe in the form of treason that Teddy Roosevelt referred to, and all of that Orwellian, unquestioning, blind allegiance stuff that, historically, lots of totalitarians and uber-nationalists believed in.
Many of them supported such governing or squelching of dissent. Most of them were absolutely sure that they were doing so for the 'good of their nations,' too.
Follow who you will, KSF. I'll follow freedom, and oppose anyone that comes between my family's and my, liberty... regardless of the stripes on their shoulders, wearing the flag on their shirt-sleeves, or their uniform.
"A thief is a thief; it matters not as to whose uniform he wears." (T. Jefferson)
entrigued~ couldn't "tuff" what out? A life of alcoholic abuse fostered by the macho military brainwash? What a bitch I must be....
>This whole thing sort of seems like political farming. People are are for the war will say things like "Support our Troops!" Which implies that if you are against the war you must automatically be against our troops
Valkyrie, G.Bush said it best when he stated that "You are either with us or against us". That disgusting man had the nerve to divide up not only the world, but this country as well. I will never forgive him for making that statement or for tearing this country apart with fear.
You can't blame the President for tearing the world apart. People tear the world apart not one man. So that is ridiculous. If you think you can do his job any better then maybe you should've been running for President. And you wonder why he's not visiting Fairbanks. What for? So he is coming to see his troops get over it.
Of course akblu, since he was in the military that means that as a woman it is your duty to stay in an abusive relationship no matter the cost. By getting out you are cleary unpatriotic and are probably in league with the terrorists. /sarcasm
entrigued, did you read the article? He's not coming here to see the troops, it is merely a fuel stop on his way to the Far East. Also they are not *his* troops they are the troops of the United States.
>You can't blame the President for tearing the world apart. People tear the world apart not one man.
That is like saying Hitler wasn't responsible for the horror of the holocaust. You are right though, he did have help. Cheny, Rummy, and the rest of his inner circle all played a hand in this. You don't think that the leader of the mighty USA couldn't have lead us down a better path? Why don't you go switch on your Rush Limbog and go back to sleep entrigued.
My husband, and to a certain extent because I love, honor, respect, and follow him I am too, are indeed puppets of the Army. My husband may have chosen this job but that doesn't mean the Army doesn't own and control our lives until his time is up. He MUST go and do whatever whenever however anything they want him to. The Army is not a job you can quit, not honorably and without tragic repercutions at the least. To those "real boys(& girls)" who have failed to realize otherwise well your nose is getting longer now isn't it Pinnochio?
akbearable- I am sure that you had no part in the world tearing it self apart. Or maybe you live in a nice little bubble. If that's the case stay there. Like I said I don't think that you could've done any better.
Practically ANYONE could've done it better!
Peace
1) I didn't have to read the article to know that he was coming here, but I read it anyway. Because it's always interesting to see what the people around me report
2) He doesn't have to get out and speak to us to get his plane refueled, but he is
3) I do consider myself "his troops"
If he spend his presidential career pleasing people all the time he wouldn't get very far now would he
"ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country"
"You are either with us, or you are not."
Kennedy and Bush both said it, only differently.
Ksflatlander is ashamed of the American PEOPLE because "Respect has been lost for... our Government" ?! (12:31pm)
WHO lost respect? Perhaps since Richard Nixon?
Get a Grip, dude!
entrigued, so... if you read it you'd know that the purpose of the trip isn't to see the troops. Obviously if he's refuleing in an Air Force base he is going to do stop to do a quick photo op.
I'm not even really sure what you're arguing any more. You've resorted to baseless claims and insane accusations. You said, "If he spend his presidential career pleasing people all the time he wouldn't get very far now would he". But... that's his job, and he isn't doing a good job of it according to his employers, the American citizen.
So, are you saying that akbearable is responsible, "for the world tearing itself apart"? Or is this another insane accusation?
Welcome to Interior Alaska Mr. President I hope you have a good visit.
But I do wish you would stay in DC and save the taxpayer a buck and not create TFR's all over the country. Your invited over for a Moose steak dinner too. If he comes over you can come too Dan.
This country has always had people eager to embrace defeat. During the Civil War, they were called Copperheads. During the Revolutionary War, they were Tories.
This nation's strength does not come from them, they are a weak. I suspect most of them are unhappy.
Bush's arrival in the Interior is special and should be celebrated. God bless George Bush and God bless the United States of America!
I trust that those who say we should respect the office of the president were equally vociferous in supporting Bill Clinton when he was under assault.
(Roomful of silence.)
Personally I respect people's right to criticize all office holders far more than I respect any individuals holding those offices. I'd rather live in a loud, boisterous, obnoxious and disrespectful country than one where people were afraid of speaking their minds. But then, I've traveled in countries where people can't criticize their leaders, I've seen that kind of fear. I don't ever want to see it here.
And if you think slamming the president is a new development, you don't know your history. Go back and read what they wrote about Adams, Jefferson, Jackson, Lincoln, both Roosevelts, Truman, or any other president while he was in office. It's a proud American tradition. Washington is probably the only one who escaped office relatively unscathed.
So bash Bush, criticize Clinton, mock McCain, ostracize Obama...just don't come after the Constitution. That's when I'll get mad at you.
BTW: Bush is the most entertaining topic on newsminer.com this side of gay marriage. I wonder what that means.
TAC, Interesting observation, Gay Marraige and Gearge Bush rate right up there with dumpster diving and and bicycles on road ways!
At least President Bush will stop and visit troops unlike Obama who wants a photo op with other world leaders so he can claim he has a foreign policy plan.
As a Soldier I support the President no matter who he is. It was tough during the Clinton years. I have no strings attached to me. I serve my country and its citizens. Although some of the whining citizens are blithering idiots and need to be sent to a 3rd world country.
But our Constitution protects them and their shallow arguments. Somew people are just born to bitch and complain about everything. It is always someone elses fault.
I will be there Monday and I hope to shake the mans hand. One thing that should be said about him it that he means what he says. Unlike the majority of politicians who speak out of the side of their neck and do something completely opposite.
akblugirl: entrigued~ couldn't "tuff" what out? A life of alcoholic abuse fostered by the macho military brainwash? What a bitch I must be....
Yes, every Soldier is trained to be that way/sarcasm Guess you have a problem with picking out a quality husband and stayed when you should have left. Explains all of your nasty comments about the military.
The only reason Bush is taking time to address the troops is he has to have his precious plane refueled so he can go to the Olympics. Imagine how many of your hard earned dollars are going towards that. I wish I could go to the Olympics. Life is so rough.
Like I said, "Once the arrogant TEXAN gets to Fairbanks, it won't be the same." I invite you all for a shot of Tequila in front of the artic cam and then we'll wash it down with a beer. I should be there sometime around the 15th of September, so look on this web site and I'll have the time I'll be there. I'll be supplying all the libations.
Sincerely the Friendly
Arrogant Texan
Can you drink in public in Fairbanks?
Sorry, Raytech. Open containers of alcoholic beverages haven't been legal in the north since... well, since we started catering to the neo-puritans and the tourists.. Wouldn't want to offend anyone, ya' know...
Is that tequila an anejo variety of Patron, Centenario, or Corralejo vinting, or other tasty liquid of golden-aged type?? If so, I'll bring my own shooter, so as to partake in the proper breaking of law in a hygenic manner on camera...
I enjoy reading all the comments from all you "monday morning quarterbacks".
Don't you think if the administration new for certain this outcome they would have done things different?
Don't you think if the administration would have known about 911 they would have stopped it?
It's easy for all of us to look back and say "anyone could have done it better" but the FACT is, we'll never know that. True we are in a mess right now but it is not by one man's fault.
Hopefully people will look back and seriously consider who they will vote for in the future and not just mark the "Republican" or "Democratic" check boxes.
G-dub is just alright with me, G-dub is just alright, oh yeah...
Betterthings: It is widely known that Air Force One can refuel in the air. That negates your "only reason" for him stopping by. Maybe he actually wants to communicate with some of the people he is ultimately responsible?
Either that or he just wants to visit all 50 states before he leaves office....
I see from the archives that there is not a lot of comments posted unless it's something political. I hope I won't be drinking by myself. I think ya'll (gotta keep it Texan) need a drink, so as I said earlier look for the time to be posted somewhere around the 15th of September. Maybe we'll make the front page!! I hope we don't get arrested. That would not be a good way to start my life in Fairbanks.
It will be Herradura! Both Resposado and Anejo. Then we'll wash it down with some home made honey wheat beer. In fact, I will bottle it tomorrow. What a country! Just think, in some countries we would be shot for meeting and having a drink.
All of you Bush Haters are just killing me.. He is not coming here to hear you cry and whine about how you hate the war and him as President. He is coming here to see our troops-- you know the ones who fight for our freedom. Instead of mouthing off let our troops have this HONOR to meet there Commander in Chief. If Bush cared to see you or hear your uneducated non military comments then he would have stopped at a local bar or in an off base forum where you probably spend the majority of your time. Let the Soldiers and Airman ENJOY this once on a lifetime opportunity. By the way I am a military wife with a husband who has deployed in SUPPORT of this war 4 times and I SUPPORT him and this country. That is a slap in the face to every military wife and family to hear there spouses called " puppets.. Get a clue or move to Canada
akblugirl,
Soldiers have a very good reason for fighting in a war. It is called covering your buddies back and making sure everyone gets home safely. When the bullets are flying that's all that matters. That is the only reason to fight. It just so happens that the American Soldiers are covering your back and making sure you and their families all get home safely. If you don't consider that a good reason for Soldiers to fight, good for you and your narrow view of the world. It takes all kinds.
Last time I checked we are still in Afghanistan, the Taliban and Iraq's previous regime declared war against us. Our President without a reciprocal declaration from Congress fought them in their land not here in ours. So with one hand tied behind his back he has dismantled the majority of the world terrorist organizations. America has used restraint in dealing with our enemies. Had we not, this war would have never started for the troops beyond the first day. Refer to the US Policy on use of nuclear weapons.
The Democrats took over congress on the promise that they would bring the troops home and a month later the surge began. Congress voted to authorize the President the authority to use force to remove Saddam from power because of the continued attacks against forces enforcing the no-fly-zone. The President gave him the chance to leave peacefully numerous times. The UN Security Counsel Resolutions that Iraq violated are documented ad nauseum including the initial cease fire after Desert Storm.
Since 9-11 Americans have not died from an attack on American soil. Did we get Bin Laden yet? No, but we didn't go after Saddam after his forces attacked Kuwait over OIL. We are fighting in Iraq over oil, but not for American consumption, for use as a source of income for terrorist organizations versus use by Iraq's new secular government. Refer to Iraq and UN food for oil programs and the siphoning by Saddam's regime.
Above all, President Bush restored dignity to the office of the President of the United States of America. I am proud to say that I served with him.
"That is a slap in the face to every military wife and family to hear there spouses called " puppets"
Thank you!
Unfortunately, they can't get past their own issues to stop, listen and be respectful. I wouldn't waste anymore time on them and their hate speech. They're just plain ignorant and will be disrespectful any chance they have an audience and then attempt to justify it or twist it so that calling us puppets fit their very narrow minds no matter what we say. Just ignore them. We know better :)
it better not stop raining just for president Bush *evil grin*
then again it probably will since he's Yahweh's chosen president.
BigDan--- If I remember right, Obama made a request to visit with the troops while he was in the mideast. But he was denied permission by the powers that be. I could be wrong but I think I heard or read that in one little news blurb, then it quickley disappeared like so many news items.
He could have visited as a member of Congress but not as a Candidate. He did not want to leave the spot light to talk to the troops in the mid east or in Germany.
seven - Obama wasn't allowed to bring his campaign advisor with him to visit the troops that you're referring to. So, he chose not to go and went and worked out instead.
if i recall right, yall are making a big deal outta this now, but 2 years ago i believe the first lady and the daughters where here in alaska and no one seemed to say anything about it. they went to denali park and had a few jets at fai but no one seems to remember it, why is it really a big deal now?
The dictionary defines puppet as an artificial figure representing a human being or an animal, manipulated by the hand, rods, wires, etc., as on a miniature stage.. I hardly think ANY of our men and women are puppets. Bad choice of words. Now not only are they being called names they are not even real people anymore.. Lack of blatant disrespect for our families in uniform.
News Miner...... Please run a note about the TFR that his visit will cause.
There are a lot of strips out there that people will be grounded on!
http://tfr.faa.gov/save_pages/detail_8_0...
I wish that I could be there Monday, at EAFB. Got to work, though, and I have no security clearance. I think that the President has been successfully demonized by the left and the media. He has taken the neccesary actions to protect the citizens of the USA.
All of the Monday morning generals and diplomats need to put in perspective that all of their information comes from a biased media. You dont know the whole story (nor do I). But "peace" sounds like a great idea. If we could all just get along. We should forget those 20 years that the Islamic jihadists were attacking and killing Americans. I know that you might find it unbelievable, but the POTUS might have more "strategery" than you give him credit for. And to claim that Bush is the least popular president in history, based on polls or whatever, is just ignorant. (I wonder, if they had even had polls back then, how Lincoln would have fared. Half the country was at war with him, and his own side mostly despised him. I bet that would add up to less than 30%.)
As for patriotism, I try not to doubt others. But when congress members falsely accuse soldiers of "murder" and "war crimes", I believe that crosses the line. That congress member no longer has credibility when he/she proclaims "I support the troops". And when citizens spit on veterans or soldiers (it has happened recently), or verbally abuse them, they also forfeit the right to claim credibly, "I support the troops". You cant bomb, or blockade, an enlistment office and say "I support the troops".
Finally, a great many presidents have stopped here in route to or coming back from Asia. In '84, Reagan was able to set up a meet with Pope John Paul II, through a circumstance of timing (or perhaps fate), and since the country was a little more civilized then, they were able to do it at the airport. Many people didn't like Reagan, and there are always Catholic haters, but they were able to pull it off, and it was unbelievably awesome. A piece of history I cherish.
akbearable said: "G.Bush said it best when he stated that "You are either with us or against us"."
You should at least get the quote correct. He said "You are either with us, or you are with the terrorists." SOTU 2002
Yes, glacierles, they did 'pull it off.' And Mr. Ray-gun was protested on campus, when he went there to the Wood Center. I believe that the largest/longest banner there was held by John Alfonsi (now deceased) and friends, and read, "Machiavelli Loves Ronnie Ray-gun.." John and friends weren't forced to stand in a 'free speech zone,' and, in fact, stood right on the curb where Ronnie's SS detachment and limo drove up to the WC.
I stayed home that day. Not being able to get coffee, and being turned around by the cops first thing in the morning, set me off in a bad mood.. I went back to my cabin, made coffee, listened to music, and fired weapons across the slough at the Island there, target practicing.
He stayed on Chena Pump Rd. at either the Stevens' or Murkowski's property, if I recall, causing the road to be shut down fro Roland Rd. to the campground at Hopkinsville (allegedly for security reasons), and inconveniencing a lot of people who were turned around at the Chena Pump campground by AST, parked sideways, with their strobe lights revolving.
His trip to the Wood Center also meant that many persons who relied on caffeine from that common-area cafeteria weren't able to obtain their morning dose of socially acceptable, physically addictive, stimulants, and modern education likely suffered even more than usual for it..
But it's not just the left who holds great disdain for GW, nor is it simply because of the media. In fact, the media has more often carried bogus claims of victory re. anti-terrorism actions, including cases that either didn't happen the way that they were initially reported by GW and crew, or didn't happen at all, according to later accounts and media watch-dogs..
Re. reasons to despise Shrub's actions against the Bill of Rights, thomas.gov is hardly a random media source. However, once there, you can plainly see why many anti-neo-con, right-leaning persons utterly despise his disrespect for the constitution, and specifically the Bill of Rights. Even with his own neo-con court, he is often over-turned.
Nope, his success with his antics are the result of a spineless Democratic Party, afraid of bad press more than they are anything else, and an entranced, partisan, lock-step Republican Party. Add to that the devious and bizarre minds of Dick "Ooops, sorry 'bout that" Cheney, Karl Rove, and a few of the other PNAC sociopaths, and it's been a truly 'perfect storm' for Amerika to fall prey to quasi-fascist nationalism, shouting "seig heil!!" all the way to the near-obliteration of two-and-a-quarter centuries of seeking a dream's reality.. But hey, I hope that y'all enjoyed the ride. ;^>)

There ya go, glacierles....read these and now neither one of us will make unfounded, ignorant statements on the subject again....
Peace
A lot of these people need to grow up. Yes, if you don't agree with someone's decisions, speak up. But do it in a respectful, professional way, or keep it to yourself until you can. I'll be on Eielson on Monday and I hope to meet the President simply because it's the chance of a lifetime. And I'll bet 10 bucks that a lot of people that are Bush-bashing on this site actually voted for him in '04. I agree that he's made some bad decisions, but Congress does have a say in all this. He's just the President, he's not God. Other people (namely the Senators and Congressmen) back him in all the laws that are passed. I just get tired of all these people posting negative, emotional posts when a few simple statements of fact would do just as well. But then again, we do live in Fairbanks.
Raytech,
Herradura anejo passes the 'no-lime-juice' test just fine.
Honey wheat beer can range from amazing to awful. But I'll take a sip anyway; nothing ventured, nothing gained.
I'll bring my favorite Patron shooter, some lime juice, a lemon, a mug for decanting home-brew, and some classic Fbks political memorabilia and visual aids, including a 'Eat a Pickle for Hickel' sign, a Proposition 5 'Legalize Hemp' yard sign, and a 'Ross Perot for President' sign..
(**Sorry, I didn't vote for either Perot -or- Hickel, subscribing to the notion that Perot was "a hand-grenade with a crew cut.." and that Hickel's inaugural speech to a Catholic school about the supposed metaphysical authority ordaining his land management policies implied to me that he was a notch too close to being a theocrat for my personal tastes.... But I do, indeed, like a good dill pickle..)
akblugirl - I understand you're disgruntled, your husband was an alcoholic and you blame your marital issues on the macho military messages you think was the cause. I will give you SOME leeway to your anger. And even with that, it's really a stretch. The military didn't order him to drink.
As for your links - one of them being wikipedia - anyone educated knows that anyone can put together a wikipedia page and post info and manipulate it and change it, so don't rely on wikipedia as a substitute for the Encylopedia itself.
akblugirl---
I've seen the first of your links before. If you notice, it is about the quality rankings of the presidents, not the popularity. 2 distinctively different questions. In these posts, we were discussing poll numbers. Why would that be? Because the jury is still out on history's judgement of Bush, regardless of however much hate might be consuming you. History will be written down the road, in retrospect. It always is.
The second of your links is also irrelevant. It only goes back to the 1930's. They had no polls prior to that.
So, I guess that you weren't writing about me when you described "unfounded, ignorant statements".
Dirk---
I'm so sorry that you were so inconvenienced way back when. It must have been a traumatic experience, not getting your morning coffee at Wood Center.
And what gall the Secret Service had, to close down the road to Sen. Murkowski's home because the President was overnighting. My goodness, your life was difficult for that 24 hours.
Are you suggesting that the only reason that the Democrats in Congress, who foam at the mouth with their hatred of Bush, decided not to impeach Bush because they are afraid of bad publicity? That is just plain nuts. Crazy. If they had the goods on Bush, they would have orgasms going for it. For impeachment, they need more than bitter bile, they need evidence that would stand up. And they certainly are not adverse to bad publicity. Take today's antics, for example.
Dirk---
What president in the past 70 years wasn't protested on one campus or the other?
So as Taps just played here on base to close out the day, I will as well. Have a great weekend and hopefully the weather will hold out for the fair!!!
To return to my earlier point about president-bashing:
Sometime around 1995 or so I was in the Seattle area . I happened to be in Redmond one day, driving amidst the sea of BMWs and Lexi (I believe that's the proper pluralization for Lexus) when I came up behind a seriously beat-up old Dodge sedan belching black smoke, driven by a, well, dodgy looking guy with shaggy hair, stubble on his face, and a cigarette dangling from his lips (definitely not your standard Redmond type). On his bumper was a sticker that read, "Curly, Larry, Moe & Clinton makes four."
This was a moment of supreme patriotic pride for me. Not because I was a Clinton-hater (I wasn't, nor am I a Bush-hater), but because, as I mentioned earlier, I've traveled in countries where you aren't allowed to do make such statements.
Here was a guy who, from the looks of him, stood on a fairly low rung of the socio-economic ladder, yet he could openly mock the most powerful man in the country and have no fear of retribution. How many countries are there where this is the case? Even in some fairly free countries, this would not be allowed. At the time I thought to myself, "As long as people can do this, America has not gone too far down the toilet. And as long as we have this freedom, I'll love this country with all my heart."
Regardless of how you feel about the president, don't forget to stop and appreciate the freedoms you have. Thank a soldier? Absolutely. But also thank our founders for creating a republic based on ideals rather than on themselves. They knew that all men are fallible, so they chose to limit power rather than find a man they trusted. And despite plenty of abuses, the system they designed still basically works.
This blog, as idiotic as it sometimes gets (and I'm one of the prime idiots who contributes) is one more manifestation of the gift that was given to us 232 years ago. Let's not lose sight of just how sacred that gift continues to be.
Now, on with the battle!
Dirk, I believe you are a true conservative by the few comments I read from you. Conservatives are against being interventionist and police of the world. To those "conservatives" that think that Shrub is a good president, I ask you: How many times have you read the constitution? This administration is a constitutionalist nightmare. Our fourth ammendment is basically gone. We have no choice for the presidential election anymore and the media is reponsible for most of it, they don't care if they are dem's or Rep's. We had one great candidate in the Republican primary but we blew it.
I have great personal respect for the military men and women, and I know they would give their life for our freedom, however, the military is not fighting for my freedom in Iraq... the borders here are open and any terrorist can enter. Much of our Border Patrol happens to be depoyed in Iraq.
Skagdog: You write, "Don't you think if the administration would have known about 911 they would have stopped it?"
Obviously you didn't realize the Bush Administration orchestrated the 9/11 attacks. It all had something to do with Dick Cheney and Halliburton. They just "say" a group of "terrorists" did it. How convenient.
This is not the first time such an event has been staged. A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, the Empire blew up its own Death Star and claimed a ragtag group of rebels was responsible. But this site documents the TRUTH! Watch the video and make up your own mind.
http://debunking911.com/questions.htm
TAC, That has to be one of your best ever posts. I even agree with you on it.
MamaBearOf2: I know someone who made a deliberately false numerical change to a Wikipedia article on a local institution a while back, just for laughs and to see what happened. Last I heard, no one had caught the error yet.
Wikipedia can be useful for basics, and generally provides links to valid research. The journal Nature found Wikipedia's science articles nearly as accurate as Britannica's (http://www.wired.com/culture/lifestyle/n...). Still, it should be approached with extreme caution and never offered as a source.
Thanks, redleg. I assume the part you agree with is my admitting to being one of the prime idiots.
Dr. C.
T_A_C, You wrote: So bash Bush, criticize Clinton, mock McCain, ostracize Obama...just don't come after the Constitution. That's when I'll get mad at you.
I thought you were a "Democrat" and I thought that Democrats don't care much about the constitution?!
I am not being sarcastic, I am a new citizen and trying to learn. BTW, what is a Curmudgeon?
EuMesmo: Call me classless, call me an idiot, call me an insult to the human race, but please, please, don't call me a Democrat. Those are fighting words! (OK, I'm exaggerating, but I have never been a member of any political party, and never intend to become one).
I would not say that Democrats don't care about the Constitution. They do happen to interpret it differently than the Republicans, and I tend to disagree with both parties on various points.
As for the definition of a curmudgeon, this from Merriam-Webster:
"a crusty, ill-tempered, and usually old man"
Hope that helps. I'm only kind of old and really not ill-tempered, just grumpy.
Welcome to America. One of the many things I love about this country is that anyone can come here from anywhere and become one of us. I sincerely hope your life here is all that you hoped for and more.
Dr. C.
Thanks Dr. C.
I made a commitment to obey and defend the constitution, and I took this oath very seriously, but I need to learn a lot more about our country and the constitution.
Here is a good video

TAC - what's really scary is that wikipedia is widely used now as the new and unabridged encyclopedia. How very tragic.
And we wonder why we are talking about the dumbing down of our society.
EuMesmo: Just out of curiosity, where did you move here from?
"If you want a symbolic gesture, don't burn the flag; wash it."
I don't agree with the war or Bush, but I don't believe in bashing a majority of my peers (though in this case it's only 27% as of 7/31/08.)
Not much to say about said politics, seems pointless to argue for me, but I do know I hate that damn 'No Child Left Behind'-what a farce.
From Brazil.
Gee, glacierles, I almost thought that your empathy was sincere for a moment. Touching, really... That's o.k., though. I actuially enjoyed the music, better (freshly-ground) coffee, and target shooting that morning.. ;^>)
No, glacierles, I never mentioned their hesitation to impeach Shrub; they have other reasons for that. But, nonetheless, last Friday, the impeachment articles for GW were addressed in the House Judiciary's hearing.
If you were as well researched as you pretend in 'all things Shrub,' you'd know that there's some credible and documented hypotheses as to why Pelosi and some other Dem honchos have been stern with their peers about not addressing impeachment.
I -was- specifically referring to the hesitance of the Dems to reign in clear violations of the constitution, instead leaving that to the SCOTUS; Shrub's significantly neo-con SCOTUS, at that.
Some of that fear of bad press involved the 'what if..' phenomenon. A similar principle had the American People bumping their approval rating of Jr. Bush from roughly 49% the day (or so..) before the attacks on the Twin Towers, to over 73% in short order, without him doing anything of significance whatsoever. Like magic; POOF!! Cause the public to become fearful, that comfortable urban public that relies on someone else for nearly everything they do and have,, and they scream, "Protect me daddy!! I'll follow you anywhere. Just protect meeeeee!!"
Mingle that sentiment with the heated and blind desire for pay-back, (regardless of whether or not the actual perpetrators had been correctly identified yet), as well as adding in the traditional blind allegiance that historically accompanies puffed up nationalism during times of war, and even Mr. Magoo could've succeeded in, and survived, the karma of Shrub's criminal blunders.
But I suspect that his day's coming. In the mean-time, I'd advise most persons to avoid hunting ANYTHING with Dick Cheney. I hear that he drinks gobs, and then fondles shotguns. Bad combination..
Thank you, EuMesmo.
I ewspecially believe in non-interventionism where it involves the nanny state's or totalitarians' entry into the lives of the otherwise free People.
Many/most of our modern-day supposed conservatives have failed to realize that governmental conservatism and fiscal conservatism walk hand-in-hand with some forms of social liberalism. You can't have small, limited government, and have them policing everyone's bedrooms and livingrooms simultaneously. It's a significant contradiction in ideas.
What many who incorrectly believe themselves to be conservative really are, is corporatist nationalists and theocrats, bent on enforcing their religious beliefs through legislation, and/or making sure that the corporations (the handlers of many of them) have greater rights, greater access, more immunity and authority in this world, than the free individuals who are supposedly being served and represented by that government...
Then we have the neo-liberals, here to save us from all of our woes, make sure that no one's feelings are ever hurt, and of whom many are apparently convinced without a doubt that none of us can safely handle a firearm unless we're in the military or on the police force. (Ironically some of the very same persons who are busting their heads during protests and civil disobedience, I might add.... I guess I'm still trying to figure out -that- particular bit of logic...)
Both confused and misled groups seem to believe that we either need to be saved from ourselves, or have the country's government and infrastructure saved from us; the citizens, and heirs to the shrinking 'American Dream..'.
In short, traditional conservatism and liberalism are dead, and the strange elements that they've been apparently replaced with seem to defy coherent definition, or consistency in ideology.
But what the heck, I can stil eat a moose hot dog, and drink a cold beer, so this must be America, right?? ;^>)
While visiting relatives today an anti bush comment warranted me a boot out of the house, sad because I see that same sort of blind faith and intolerance to a difference of political views here in this forum as well. I'd join the bush bashing sign holders if only I wasn't afraid of repercutions to my husbands position, I know many spouses who would agree but not in the light of day. Can't see my point of view? Stand next a soldier or become one and then you might understand what it's like to be afraid to lose something over nothing in a war for the rich at the hands of the poor.
KSFLATLANDER,
Reading your posts, I am embarrassed for you. Please stop.
Dirk---
No, you did not mention the word "impeachment". I am at fault for interpreting your post of 8:48, where you wrote of lack of backbone to go after the Nazi's. In retrospect, I guess that I thought that you meant something gutsier than making fun of their names, or some non politcal occurance, or making up quotes of "Seig Heil" for them to be saying. If conservatism were name calling, then you sir would be the master.
If you HAD been writing about impeachment, I would say dont put too much stock in the current move by Rep. Kucinich. He has a suspect reputation, and not many followers. As for any comment made by Speaker Pelosi, I just dont believe a word that she ever says. I mean that literally.
Finally, I make no pretense about being an expert in defending the President, or Shrub as you so brilliantly like to call him. I am just another citizen, one of the minority that still respect the President. I missed jumping on that hate filled bandwagon. If I dont live up to your standards as a conservative, well my reaction is "So What?" I am what I am.
I am amazed at how so many people gripe about the government officials and yet do nothing! If you want to sit here and whine.. move! I hear Canada is full of idiots, I believe many of you would fit in well. Bashing people because their in the military or a military dependant, come on get real! The military provides many jobs and supports our economy! I'd like to see many of you be brave enough to dedicate your life to something worthwhile. Rather that itch and moan about something you think you know. The military and the men serving are not perfect but at least their dedicated enough to try to stick through their tours. They have more commitment than anyone I know. So take your stuck up nose elswhere and get a life!

AKhusky--Since you're already embarrassed for me I'll give you something else to be embarrassed about. I just read that AIDS is up 40% in the U.S. and 15 to 18 thousand are dying from it every year in the U.S. Gay Rights--Vote for that! I suppose President Bush is responsible for that also. The ice is gettin very thin where mankind is skating.
I guess we have found the new topic that will bring out personal insults , name calling and put downs against each other.
What to make changes, get out and vote. Less than 20 % generally vote in this borough. Let's see if the North Star Borough can set a record voter turn out this year.
TAC and I quote "To return to my earlier point...... Now, on with the battle!"
That entire post, and yeah I will agree with the idiot part too :) You are right I will let you bash the president and stand quietly and not say a thing, but go after the constitution, that is another story all together.
Ganted I took an oath some 24 years ago to protect and defend the consitutiion, but since taking that oath I have realized it is the constitution that is the most important document that our goverment has ever produce.
With Victory in sight in Iraq, the looney left is left without a mantra! It is quite enjoyable to watch. Though the media played their tune as loud and often as they could, most Americans supported the War long enough to weaken Al Queda so that Iraq could get on its feet. An interesting side effect was that the War attracted Al Queda to the Iraqi killing zone, where coalition forces could deliver justice, Bush-stye.
The looney-left, that Fairbanks has plenty of, are left worrying about where they will get their next doobie!
Glacier et al.
Bush has been digging his own hole for 8 years. I do want to acknowledge I was behind him 100% after 9/11 and voted for him for both terms, but since, I have been enlightened regarding his misguided efforts in the "war on terror," and in steering this country to the brink of financial and moral ruin despite his assurances that what we are doing is righteous. I just will never be able to condone torture no matter how many lives it will save. Our country MUST maintain the high ground at all costs.
Under his leadership and that of his cabinet our country is in a hole that I don't know if we will be able to get out of. Unfortunately, our choices for president on both sides of the aisle are equally disappointing. McCain is no longer a voice of reason and independent and Obama's inexperience makes many of us nervous. To summarize my areas of concern...
1) Economy is in shambles. The working/middle class standard of living is declining with these protracted wars fuel placing a huge drag on the economy. Wait until unemployment starts rising by leaps and bounds;
2) Fuel Prices and the lack of action bring alternative cleaner sources to market. What are we waiting for? There needs to be more money available for R&D with the goal of making us an energy independent nation;
3) The world's perception of America. IT is just sad no matter how you look at it. I travel and I know. We need to be a shining light in the darkness again, a symbol of greatness.. not a brutal force.
4) American's (for the most part) have forgotten how to spend within their means. I am waking up to my own habits. I applaud the city in pushing mass transit.;
5) Real Estate Crisis--Could have been prevented if proper regulations were in place and the Fed was on the ball (Bernake and Greenspan) Sometimes the free market has a darkside... My Opinion
Well, this whole rant was off topic.
God Bless all our service members and their families. Their sacrifice means much to me and my family. Our family will always support our troops!
Wow!
I usually stay out of these, But I stand with Dirk, Dr. C., EuMesmo, and Raytech.
But most of all, I stand with Raytech for the reasons Dirk mentioned way back, and will gladly partake in the festivities for the camera!
I'll be watching for the post Raytech!
EuMesmo,
I'm glad you are with us here. I kept looking (your link) for the picture of the feds' goon squad with their auto guns on the scared Cuban boy (forget his name right now) with his uncle in the closet of their home in Miami.
I've got a copy of it around here somewhere; I had it on my kitchen bulletin board for a long time to remind my kids of the truth...
Yellowriver -
Bush's approval rating is at 29%. That's not just the "looney left".
Loving your country does NOT mean you have to love one of the worst presidents EVER.
This is a democracy, and if a public official is not doing their job right, they should be held accountable for it. Take a good look at the state of our country and hold this bonehead accountable for what he has and hasn't done during his presidency.
While all of this rambling about the war is pertinant and were all concerned, why is the issue about Social Security being overlooked? has anyone been keeping track of that? Do you realize that if passed the new law will enable [I]llegal [A]liens to draw Social Security even though they have
[N]ever contributed? or that it will be taking funds that you or I have paid over the years, and then they make it almost impossible for you or I as American Citizens to receive them (I'm speaking from personal experience). That and I want to ask Duhbie, where are all my Christmas Cards for the last several years, You owe Me!
Dondi....
EuMesmo: I'd have never guessed from your posts that you weren't from here to begin with. Your English is better and more articulate than that of many who grew up here.
I've never been to Brazil, though I've always wanted to visit there. But given some of Brazil's history, you surely know what I mean about not being free to speak your mind.
My wife was at a conference recently where she met a woman who had grown up in Eastern Europe (I forget which country now). This woman now lives in the states. She said what she is most thankful for is the freedom of speech. She grew up having to watch her every word. Sometimes it takes someone from outside our country to remind us how valuable these things are.
Has anyone seen this video yet?

Not only that, Dr. C., but his constitutional understanding and quest for knowledge are, IMO from his (your, because I bet you, EuMesmo, will read this) posts here and elsewhere, illustrate above-the-norm thinking and thoughtfulness.
Most of the Bush haters speak of the general state of the country. Let's see: high gas prices ( caused by increased world demand and a decrease in production), a sub-prime mortgage crisis (caused by an effort to expand home ownership to more Americans), the war in Iraq and Afghanistan ( caused by 9/11) and lets not forget Katrina. Who expects the national government to be micro-managing these issues? Hmmmm......
The Democrats!!! Big government and high taxes, Obama is on his way!
Ak Army Wife: There are no laws that prevent you from holding any kind of a sign ( Anti- Bush) if you choose. As far as your military husband, he should as a member of our armed forces teach you about the respect that the Commander in Chief deserves. Am I to assume that you are not partaking in any of the benefits that you as a spouse receive? Ideally, Medical care, Dental care, Commissary and PX/BX priveleges? Noneless I am sure you spend none of the monies received on the 1st and 15th of each month without fail. Hate Bush all you like, it is all a matter of opinion, but no one cares who your husband is, you holding a sign does not represent him ( unless you wear his uniform), it merely represents a military spouse not supporting her husband or any of his fellow troops. I think it is shameful disrespect the Army and for all in which they stand for.
Sounds like your name should be Imusuallyleft
Either that or "Imusuallyanignorantidiot"
Agamemnon---
I keep a photo, published in the DNM on 9/16/01, of the firefighters raising Old Glory amidst the rubble of the twin towers. I keep this photo on my refrigerater, so that I will see it and notice it every morning. I do this so that I never forget the sadness and the rage that I felt on 9/11.
Immediately after the attacks, President Bush told the American people that the war against terrorism would not be easy or quick. It might take decades to win this war. The world had changed forever. I knew what he was saying. Many of our fellow citizens would lose the passion. Some tough calls would have to be made, and being a free society as we are, there would be plenty of debate.
I think that you were with the President then. Somehow, via arguements of the left or the media or the Democrats, you have tired of the struggle. That's your right as an American.
I believe that the struggle of our times has not tired of you. The jihad terrorists will kill you tommorrow just as soon as look at you. Their version of prisoner rights is a sharp blade, so that your beheading is not so painful. And they are patient, unlike we Americans who want everything in a nice neat package.
I wish that you would reconsider the passions that you felt right after 9/11. You were correct then.
That remark about GIs not going to college sums up the lefts attitude concerning them. There idiots, Bush is an idiot, the people that work to make this country work are idiots.
I did both, college and the military. I learned a lot in the military, became an adult if you will. Don't really remember much about college though.
Imusuallyanignorantidiot:
The majority of the military is made up of enlisted, which is a generic fact. But your reasoning for such is just stupid.
Even more sad is your attack on the military dependents. Just to let you in on something, no matter what you feel or think, you NEVER EVER attack the spouses and their families - EVER.
And yes, I am a mama bear when it comes to my 2 munchkins.
And if you have any manners, I'd prefer you just say yes ma'am.
You're welcome by the way :)
glacierles,
Gotta respect your loyalty and perseverance... however, have you really checked out everything concerning 9/11?
I was right there with you on that day the towers went down: outraged, in unbelief with the rest of the U.S. It was inspiring to see everyone come together in patriotism with flags waving and all of us able to stand behind our President as he vowed to punish those responsible. I'm another one who voted for him. Twice. I believe in respecting the position of our Commander in Chief, but I must say that I regret my vote. His true colors are coming out.
Not that we should believe everything we see and read on the internet, but maybe you should do some deeper research on 9/11, friend. I mean, it is no secret that we were deceived into getting behind the war and thinking it was justified. Congress is responsible, too. I just cringe at the thought of the horrors of war that have occurred and are occurring as we sit in our comfy living rooms watching CNN. That was me but there is too much to answer for from this administration and in my opinion, they don't deserve your trust or support. How can you stand behind those that have lied to your face. They manipulated the American people using the media to march ahead with their plans. I ask you (as I'm sure you've heard before): what does Iraq have to do with 9/11?
There are so many things to question. The big one for me was: why did the Bush administration take over a year to allow an investigation into 9/11? Why did they resist and try to block attempts from families of the murdered souls to find out more? There are many more questions than answers, but enough evidence out there to clearly show that we should not trust this administration. If you are interested in some links, I'm sure many could offer some.
proud military wife4- I never said it was illegal I simply said I wouldn't want to cause my husband anymore stress or grief than his job already causes him. And yes I partake in the benefits and wages because my husband EARNS it in his job by getting up and doing whatever they want him to do and not simply because he follows Bush unless your implying that he is personally responsible for my husbands daily agenda instead of being the one who declared the invasion on Iraq therefore being responsible for the pending deployment. I can and DO support my husband and his fellow battle buddies, I respect and am proud they stand up in the face of dying in a pointless war but I do not have to like, respect, or obey Bush just because he is the Commander in Chief of my husband, respect is earned not given and he lost mine long before I was ever a military wife. Maybe you will see clearer if your husband dies and you are left wondering what for.
This is the land of the free because of the brave not the land of the free because of the president.
Dirk, I used to think like glacierles, I even tried to enlist to be in the National Guard after 9/11. But during the campaign for president in the primaries for the Republican Party last November, I started to learn more about the constitution, civil rights, war, Federal Reserve, national debt (+or- 9.5 trilion) and how our country can't afford to be the "Police of the world anymore, etc. I also learned that there are millions of non-interventionists, strict constitutionalists, real conservatives, and freedom lovers around. Many of them, young people. Please research Ron Paul.
T_A_C, Thank you for your compliment, but my English is not that good, my wife normally corrects my spelling. About Brazil, they have a stable economy, growing a lot every year, with a diversified industry and agriculture. Today, it is a free country with some "small" restrictions like gun control, few restrictions on speech (there is no country with freedom like the USA yet). Unfortunately our government is not so good in relation to other sovereign nations. In 1964, a very popular brazilian president was overthrown by a military coup with the support of the U.S. government ( http://www.gwu.edu/~nsarchiv/NSAEBB/NSAE... ). That military government was responsible for millions of assassinations of Brazilian people and torture of many other millions, including my father. But this is history (today, the Brazilian people in general, love American people and are literally honored to have some of us as their guests). This story repeats over and over again with many different nations, including Iran (search "blow back" theory).
Corinne, thank you for your very kind words. I still have a lot to learn about our constitution, our history and our beloved country. I'm thankful that I could become one of its citizens. I am very proud of it. I also thank our military for their honor, courage and sacrifice. I know that you are ready to give your life for freedom, even for the newest citizens like me.
IMUSUALLYRIGHT-
I have my own identity, several actually, The first being that my name is Heather. I'm a horseback rider, soccer player, seamstress, and a COLLEGE student. I fully intend to have my own career, my husband is earning a degree as well but you see there is this great thing about the Army, they PAY for it so you see as I rack up student loans my husband has a 4.0 grade point average because either you succeed or fail and pay yourself. AND the army rewards those trying to seek a higher education so the point I'm trying to get across here is that the Army isn't actually just made up of a bunch of college dropouts/avoiders, it's made up out of people trying to better themselves and their situation.
Oh and marrying a GI was the greatest thing of my life because he's my best friend and ally(sp) and hence the main identity I claim!
EuMesmo and I would get along together just fine... over the years I've lost more than a few of my loved ones at the hands of the horribly mismanaged US-military and "other US agencies". Over the past 60years I have seen WITH MY OWN EYES many events that "historians" will tell you didn't happen, or it happened differently.
TRUTH IS THE FIRST CASUALTY OF WAR
...and Truth is Tortured Daily in america
I have written volumes of my experiences in my personal journals..
if you to learn the truth about my friends, and my own experiences you'd wanna go smoke a pack of unfiltered cigarretes, then go puke.
smoke,puke,repeat many times...
.....we are still in the DARK AGES
and BLOWBACK ain't even half the problem
it's beyond criminal, it's mindblowing insanity that makes Alfred Hitchcock look like Captain Kangaroo.
I have visited my kin, and volunteered for many years in military veterans hospitals, spent more time in VA-hospitals than most owners of 3 Purple Hearts.. seen and experienced more than you can stand to listen to in many sittings with me.
but there is hope, I would rather hang out with people like you see giving lectures and presentations here on this website--->

Before everyone moves on to a new subject with someone or something else to gripe about, I'd like to get down to the brass tacks of what all the b****ing is really all about. It's not about the President or how much we think we know about the war or what ever else is mentioned here. It has to do with our comfortable way of life that has been interupted by all that is going on in the world. It has taken MONEY away from us. Money that we are used to having for all the little play things we want. For a lot of years now no matter how bad things got, we had the old ace in the hole. Money set aside for emergencies. Now we god diddley. I'm sure some folks still haven't felt the crunch as much as others but you get the picture. I'm also sure some are going to call this ranting or some other names but it is the truth. We planned for a rainy day but not for a storm.
Excuse me, should have been got, not god.
DT, Very interesting link, thanks.
Imusuallyright-Thank you.
I have to agree with IMR in this case, AKArmyWife, it's rather nice to see someone who is connected with the military but has not let that connection blind them to reality.
I find it incredible that people can not separate the president from the troops. Not supporting one does not mean you don't support the other. You can believe the mission they are on is illegal, immoral, unnecessary etc, but that doesn't mean you are against them.
I am not a fan of the "war" on terrorism. I say "war" with quotes because I don't think it's possible to be successful fighting an idea or concept. Look how well the "war" on drugs has been.
However, that doesn't mean I want the troops to suffer. I think that many of them signed up for the military out of pride, patriotism, and dedication to their country and are now being used for less than noble purposes(Hence my agreement with the "puppet" comment).
I once saw a great bumper sticker that said something like "I support the troops by wanting to bring them home" which is one of the best bumper stickers I've seen about the troops and "war".
Hey i love Bush. I also like W.
I am so very delighted about President Bush honering us by coming to Fairbanks, AK. He and I share the same B Day 6 July.
HOOAH to all of our troops and their families & God speed.
kudos roadtrip
I'm a military spouse and don't usually post negative comments on blogs, but I'm outraged at the pointedly negative thoughts written here about the leader of our country. Sure, there are things he's done that I don't agree with, but do you really think the announcements and comments he makes are his own? Think again!! For those of you commenting about having to get permission to gain access to a military installation, sorry 'bout that! Could it be that you're just upset because you can't see the President to give him "what for"? That's what security is all about. I'm a local business owner, which is nothing like President of the United States, but I wouldn't want someone like you visiting my place of business and telling me off, just because you didn't like the products I manufacture. Let's give the President a break and realize that it isn't always the man doing the talking or voicing his opinions--it's his advisors giving their opinions and telling him what to tell the American people. 'Nuf said from me!!
Considering he picks his advisors he can't be absolved of responsibility for what he says and does.
Everyone who is bashing the President of the United States does not deserve to live in the United States why don't you go to Iran and Iraq and first hand how they live. They started the war and we are just trying to end it. I will not vote for anyone with the name Obama and I will not discredit him even if he wins because I will respect the President of the United States no matter what we will still have our freedom and be able to live as we wish and not the way other governments warrant.
So I guess if his name was Frank you would vote for him huh.....
kgage- If we don't like him then get? Uh isn't that the whole point of living in america? The freedom to think for ourselves and voice that opinion? Interesting concept huh.
GWB did a pretty good job overall with foreign policy. At least he kep the fight with the terorrists on their soil and not ours. I didn't care for his economic policies, but overall I guess he was an average president.
