Two Rivers celebrates the Fourth with community picnic

Published Monday, July 7, 2008

TWO RIVERS -- Two Rivers celebrated the Fourth of July this year with a bang. A huge picnic was held at the Fairbanks North Star Borough park located in the Pleasant Valley area. The celebration included good food, music, door prizes, games, sled dog rides, puppies, a children’s parade, and good ol’ fashioned neighborly hospitality. A turnout of more than 200 people demonstrated the tightness of this community.

Girl Scout Troop 67 and 167 started the celebration by raising the United States and Alaska flags followed by "The Star-Spangled Banner"sung by a local Brownie troop member Laurie Wolf. Pleasant Valley Store donated hot dogs, hamburgers, and buns. Two Rivers Lodge also added to the buffet with some of their delicious food. The rest of the feast was brought in by the local community.

Games included softball, croquet, badminton, volleyball, and basketball.

The Two Rivers Dog Mushers Association hosted sled dog rides and puppy petting. Several local business and community members donated to the festivities and made our Fourth of July picnic possible: D&G Enterprises, TNT Enterprize, The What Not Shop, Pleasant Valley Equipment, Mia’s Cafe, Midnight Sun Crafts, D&L Auction, Grannies Bloomers, Hair By Cathy, Riverside Dog Grooming, Earth Link Jewelry, Two Rivers Grange Hall, Soapy Suds, Alaska Wilderness Enterprises, Chena Beaver Cache, Bunyan Brothers, Hi-Tech DJ, 55 mile guy, Tiffany Montini, Ann Mulcahy, Linda Legg, Richard and Janice Powalski, Jack Studer, Robyn Marquis, Parlee Thompson, Barbi Howard, Shelby Waterhouse, Genovine Alexander, Marie Lamb, Ron and Sharon Richards, and Brad Sundstrom.

A special thanks goes out to the Two Rivers community and businesses for supplying good food and fun, and to Linda Legg and Ginger McKee for their organizing efforts.
