Alaskans eligible for emergency benefits

Published Sunday, July 20, 2008

FAIRBANKS — Workers who don’t qualify for regular extended unemployment may be eligible for Emergency Unemployment Compensation, which went into effect July 6.

Unemployment in the state rose above 6.5 percent in June, triggering an extended benefits program for eligible Alaskans, said Tom Nelson, director of the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development’s Division of Employment Security.

To be eligible for the emergency relief, a worker must have had an unemployment insurance benefit claim that ended on or after May 1, 2007. The worker cannot be eligible for a new claim under regular unemployment provisions and can’t be eligible for regular extended benefits.
