Permits approved for Juneau runway extension

Published Wednesday, July 23, 2008

JUNEAU -- Juneau's planning commissioners have approved permits for expanding the runway at the capital city's international airport.

The project would build over 77 acres of nearby wetlands and required plans for the protection of other wild lands to compensate.

Airport Manager Dave Palmer says he hopes the project goes to bid by the end of 2008.

He estimated the runway expansion will cost $49 million.

The runway expansion is geared toward extending safety areas along the perimeter of the runway to help the airport comply with Federal Aviation Administration requirements.

The runway expansion still requires more review by the state and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
