Chuck those 40-below boots in the closet; summer isn’t far away
Published Thursday, March 20, 2008
Isn’t March a wonderful month? I sure have been enjoying myself the last few weeks. All that daylight, the warmer temperatures, and the promise of spring can’t help but make me giddy. It’s hard to believe that a month from now it will be summer. (Well, OK — technically it will just be spring but then two weeks later, Bam! summer.) And then a month later will be solstice and we’ll start losing daylight again, and then we’ll have two days of fall and then it will be winter again. Dark, cold, long-underwear winter. So I’m saying April is summer.
Lots of activities going on around the area. Dogs are mushing, snowmachines are zooming, people are out and about skiing, playing and sledding — that’s for sure. There’s even a rumor that Bigfoot has been spotted in the area frolicking in the snow and checking out books at the library.
You forget how many people actually live in Alaska in the winter because you only see them in cars. Now that we can see each other in the light of the day its like, “Hey — how ’bout that — you still live here?”
Yes, we have survived another winter. Twenty below doesn’t scare me. A few inches of snow — bring it on. I haven’t plugged in my car for a good month now and no one can make me. I am a survivor. I will make it to spring and just as soon as it hits 30, I will not wear a coat. Nope. Goodbye winter with all your baggage and bad attitude and unattractive hat hair. Spring is about to kick you in the butt!
Rummage sale on Saturday
One of my favorite things about spring is a good rummage sale. This weekend, you can attend one of the first rummage sales of the season, the Business Professionals of America rummage sale at the high school gym. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, you can find deals ranging from arts and crafts to vendor items to typical garage sale stuff. Oh yeah. This is a fundraiser, so go buy some stuff.
Production to benefit Alexis Flynn
The Delta Christian Drama Association will be donating proceeds from its Easter production “Perhaps for a Good Man” to Alexis Flynn, the local tot who needs a kidney transplant. You can attend the production at 7 nightly March 28 through March 30 at Living Waters Assembly of God. Donations for the program will be taken at the door for Alexis. Living Waters is located next to Interior Building Supply and across from the IGA on the Richardson Highway.
Paint the town purple
Make plans to attend the flea market fundraiser at the Community Center this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. to support Delta Relay for Life, the event that supports the American Cancer Society in May. Enjoy “new to you” items for sale, food, music and even pictures with the Easter Bunny.
Easter egg hunt
The Delta Lions Club will host its annual Easter egg hunt on Sunday at 1:30 pm at the Delta Fairgrounds. Kids of preschool age to third-graders are invited to participate and should arrive no earlier than 1:15 p.m. for the hunt. There will be six different areas for the different age groups. Sixty dozen plastic eggs filled with goodies and 15 dozen real eggs will be hidden, with one special egg for each group redeemable for a special prize.
Win half a cow, half a pig
Hungry? You can fill your freezer with a half of a cow or half of a pig (cut and wrapped by Delta Meat and Sausage) if you win the Delta Lions Club raffle or win a $500 gift certificate to Granite View Sports and Gifts. Tickets are $5 each, and the winner will be drawn after the annual Easter egg hunt put on by the Lions Club on Sunday at the fairgrounds. You need not be present to win. Buy your tickets from a Lion’s Club member at the on Saturday, or call Lion Ann Geise at 347-6052.
Arctic Winter Games medals
Team Alaska’s Bantam boys hockey team, coached by local Mike Tvenge, with Delta boys Brett Smith and Jacob Schultz captured the bronze ulu at the Arctic Winter Games in Yellowknife, Northern Territories, this month. Also bringing home a medal is Annie Grossman, member of Team Alaska’s women’s hockey team. They won the gold ulu. Congratulations to all!
Local dairy nabs award
More congratulations to Northern Lights Dairy, which was presented the 2007 Cooperator of the Year Award at the Delta Farm Forum earlier this month. Northern Lights Dairy is owned and operated by Don and Lois Lintelman, who won the award in 1979. The dairy produces whole milk, 2 percent milk and ice cream.
Fort Greely Middle School open house
The middle school will be hosting an open house for parents of sixth- and seventh-graders March 31 at 6:30 p.m. Topics covered will include what courses are being offered next year, what the middle school course of study is and how computer-based scheduling will be done this year. Refreshments will be available.
Have a blessed Easter!
