ANCHORAGE -- Chugach Electric Association is investigating the cause of a fire that burned a plastic ball marker on a Fort Richardson power line.
Authorities say the flaming ball melted onto the ground around 11:30 a.m. Saturday, sparking a fire on the grass below the power line off the Glenn Highway.
Anchorage Fire Department spokesman Tom Kempton says the fire was put out at 11:49 a.m.
There were no injuries.
Chugach spokesman Phil Steyer says the plastic balls are about the size of beach balls and serve as aviation markers. He says such fires are unusual but not unheard of.
Steyer says there have been no outages from Saturday's fire, which occurred on a 115,000-volt transmission line near the National Guard Armory on the post.
He says the cause of the blaze is unknown at this time.
