Brown time

To the editor:

I just read Jay Ramras’ letter about why we should all just switch to natural gas and everything will be OK. Seriously?!

The overwhelming majority of the people that live in this town do not have the ability to receive natural gas in their homes. Some of us can’t even get cable TV or Internet, much less natural gas. Is Jay going to pay for the gas company to build lines out to all of our homes? If not, who is?

Jay voted against the bill that would have capped the price of fuel oil at $2.50 a gallon. He voted against limiting the cost of electricity for Fairbanks. My biggest question is who is Jay representing? It’s certainly not me, and I suspect if the majority of people knew what he voted for, and against, they would not vote for him.

Jay did try and put amendments on the cruise ship initiative that surprisingly would help out the tourist industry. Not surprising since he has a vested interest in his hotel and restaurants. It’s time for a change. It’s time for John Brown.

Of course a bill capping the price might have gotten tied up in court for a long time...

I think a price cap with a state subsiding the difference was what the bill was trying for...

And I tend to agree - Jay seems to vote in his best interest - he gets elected based on name recognition alone

Frank would have been more interesting

There are a few things Jay Ramras did as my legislator that I am not happy about. There is nothing about what John Brown represents that I like at all. If I had a choice, and I do, I will vote for Ramras and hope that he wises up. Better hope than depression.

The author of the letter sounds helpless.

Mr. Brown recently penned an editorial (couple of days ago) in which he grossly mis-stated Alaska oil production. He claimed that we export billions of barrels of oil every year. A candidate that can't even get the most basic fact straight about our number one economic engine needs to do a little more homework before he'll get my vote.

Do you have a direct line to get heating fuel, I bet not. That is why they build storage tanks.

In one sentence Jay voted against regulating electric and the next Jay added something for tourism, but you say he only votes for what benefits him? So Jay doesn't have to pay his electric bills?

I don't know what was added concerning tourism, but I would venture that it would have benefited tourism as a whole, not just Jay.

I am not in Jay's district, so no vote from me.

From what I've seen, Jay may not vote for what you personally want, he votes for what is right and probably has a pretty clear conscience.

I think the thought process is that when some switch to natural gas, it will reduce the demand for oil, thereby causing the price of heating oil to drop so those of us who still use it can afford it. I don't believe that will happen, but that is the conventional wisdom behind the natural gas argument.

Feel sorry for District ten voters, no matter who wins, the voters are the losers.

Jay Ramras also joined the gutting of PERS/TRS (as did Mike Kelly). The state and university employees will not get social security. Without the old defined benefit from PERS/TRS, they are left at the mercies of the financial markets. Check out Business Week, the Wall Street Journal, or the New York Times to see just how badly the markets are doing. No new hires can afford to stay at PERS/TRS employers. If you think having disfunctional government/teachers is a good idea, maybe you should take another look at the financial markets.

Not that I agree with many of his decisions, but capping heating oil at $2.50 a gallon with the State paying the rest was a bad idea. It would have allowed businesses, individuals, etc. to stockpile Oil, and be more wasteful without consideration as to how much it would cost the State.

The energy rebates are a much more palatable solution, as they still require individual responsibility, and doesn't allow those with the most money to take advantage of the situation at the time. Plus, the rebate allowed for those using electric, natural gas, wood, coal, etc. to still gain access to lower heating costs.

What, batman_ak, you mean like those that are not in the aristocracy of government employ? Poor things!...not.

That, indeed, is one of the best things those two did.

And they don't get SS because they can opt out and have a different system. From what I hear, it's a lot better than SS; more stable and reliable.

Here is an article that was posted in the Juneau Empire that was also submitted to the News-Miner, who refused to run it, even after the author backed up her writing. And yes, I know the author. Should tell you who is in whose pockets.
