Stevens' 2014 filing only procedural, aide says

Published Wednesday, April 8, 2009

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Former U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens of Alaska has filed a statement of candidacy for the 2014 election, but an aide cautions against reading too much into the move.

Campaign treasurer Tim McKeever says the filing does not mean Stevens has decided to seek re-election. He says it simply was done to accept donations that came into the campaign after the November election.

Stevens lost to Democrat Mark Begich days after being convicted of lying on Senate disclosure forms, but the conviction was vacated this week because of prosecutorial misconduct.

Begich wasn't declared the winner until two weeks after Election Day.

McKeever says federal election laws require donations received after Nov. 4 to count toward a future election.

If Stevens were to run, the 2014 election would look very much like the 2008 race. Begich says he intends to seek re-election.

Actually it was a Net Flix membership, but he didn't know the difference.

will Uncle Ted live long enough to campaign in 2014?

could he possibly live to fulfill a six year term if elected (2020)?

Well, he's 85, so in 2020, at the conclusion of this term, he'd be 96, making him the dottering old man of the Senate, but not necessarily too old to be a Senator.

After all, Strom Thurmond was a Senator until he was 100, and... well... nevermind.

Yes, though, Stevens could conceivably serve a full term as Senator. I'm sure he'd serve us better than dear old Strom. As much as I respect him, though, I think it's time for him to retire.

I hope they can make room on the Senate floor and aisles for his Hover Round, sold by Tom Cruise. I wonder if at that age you get frequent user points on his AARP card?

It really wouldn't be a "run", but rather more of a walk, or standing still.

I like green politions-they haven't learned the tricks of the trade and genuinely care about the job they were elected to. One term limits for all...government doesn't need experience-it just needs someone to vote for everyone they are representing...make it all highschool kids with big dreams and ideas...we would be better off...

why does he need to accept campaign contributions after the election is over unless he's running for another term? can contributions be used to pay his legal fees? not that the legality of that would stop stevens from doing it..

Begich weaseled his way in and is beholden to the DNC for their money and lies. Just as the soviet style show trial was overturned, right over wrong may well prevail an Begich ousted. The majority of Alaska will not forget what was done.

So if he wins will he be the junior senator? What a burn that would be.

Now that he's clear of charges, he's going to throw another shadow over his integrity by accepting money for an election he probably has no intention of running for; can't change the stripes on a zebra I guess.

say good night Ted---we all appreciate all you did but, you messed up and it is time to go---I'm really glad that you did not have to go to jail even though you should have.
