WASHINGTON - New financial disclosures show that former Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens spent at least $1 million on legal bills defending himself against charges that he failed to report gifts as required.
A report filed this week with the Senate shows that Stevens owes between $1 million and $5 million to the Washington law firm Williams and Connolly for defending him in his corruption trial last year.
A jury found the longtime Republican lawmaker guilty in October on seven counts of lying on financial disclosure forms about gifts, including renovations that doubled the size of his home in Girdwood, Alaska. A judge dismissed the case in April, saying prosecutors withheld evidence that might have been favorable to Stevens at trial.
The disclosures filed this week are the same type of annual reports used against Stevens in his corruption case. The forms, which cover 2008, show that Stevens also owes $50,000 to $100,000 to another Washington law firm, Utrecht and Phillips.

I say its a wash - his $250k mistake cost him over a million.
Sarah wants to know where he is borrowing the money and what the interest rate is (wink, wink). Never mind........she'll call Lisa/
'Morans' making the illogical leap that somehow this vindicates Don Young in 3...2...1...
If the investigation ordered by the Judge in the Steven case is ever carried out, I believe we will find Chuch Schummer and Pat Laahy some where near the bottom of the of the folks that pulled the chains of the department of Justice attorneys that carried out the plan to ruin Senator Stevens and take control of the US Senate....
Some day and in some way they will get the bill for this whole mess.
I think it's Hitlery. She killed Vince Foster, ya know...
The illusion of "control of the Senate" is just that. An illusion. Corporations run BOTH parties and pit one party against another as a weapon of MASS distraction from what's really going on. Get a clue. It doesn't matter if Stevens or Begich or Santa Claus in office! The real leaders of the world will do whatever they want while most of America argues vehemently with moot bipartisan rhetoric.
We have the best legal system that money can buy.
Indeed st. You're right on there! The Feds should compensate him at least. Right down to the penny! I hope he sues and wins on all counts esp. defamation of character.
STEVENS = SCUMBAG
takes 10s/100s of thousands of dollars in "gifts" from the VECO scumbags. legal or not, what he did makes him a SCUMBAG.
Got THAT right, roadtrip!
alaskansheilah - Stevens got off on a technicality, so an investigation may backfire and cost him another million. The "feds" you mention, are US, and I'm not willing to foot the bill, are you?
you guys are forgetting he got off on a technicality. that doesn't change the fact that he is guilty in reality.
If you've got enough money you can get away with just about anything!!
maji & otti, are you talking about OJ and/or Clinton?
Technicality..??? Thats all you lefties can come up with to defend the slimebag demonocrats that do this stuff????
aka Scooter Libby.....Sarah Palin....and our own ITA ladies..
CHARLIE BUSSELL, YOU SHOULD RUN FOR B MAYOR
File this as reinforcement to the saying, "Lie with dogs and you'll get fleas".
He made too many bedfellows with the wrong people. Right or wrong, he's simply guilty by association.
He's lost his edge and or his mind, and it was time for him to be ousted.
Good riddance.
If the prosicution does not give ALL of the facts you are INNOCENT!
