Bear deaths down in Kodiak

Published Thursday, October 1, 2009

KODIAK, Alaska - State game officials report bear incidents are down in the Kodiak area this year.

Officials attribute the drop to more-abundant natural foods and good bear-prevention practices in populated areas.

Since July 1, eight bars have been killed in Kodiak in defense of life and property. Between July 2008 and July 2009, 18 bears were killed.

Kodiak's Fish and Game wildlife biologist says even bear sightings are down.

Alaska law allows the killing of bears when they pose a direct threat to life and property.

    "Incidents of bears are down..."
    "The bears were killed..."
