A year later, Alaska hasn't released Palin e-mails

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Sarah Palin may be gone from the governor's office, but Democrats have not forgotten about her electronic correspondence.

Public records requested more than a year ago for Palin's e-mails still haven't been provided by the state, and Alaska Democratic Party Chairwoman Patti Higgins said she thinks officials are trying to hide something.

"I think this is a travesty of justice," Higgins told the Anchorage Daily News.

Public records in Alaska are supposed to be provided within 10 days, but the state can extend the deadline for complicated requests. State officials said it's taking a lot of time to process the request for e-mails because so many were sought.

Assistant Attorney General David Jones said the 11 largest public-records requests from last year remain unfilled. He said most require the legal review of between 2,900 and 30,000 documents.

"Because of the large volume of records involved, we have pulled lawyers and paralegals from other assignments to assist with the effort," Jones said. "Unfortunately, it's a very time-consuming process."

Palin resigned as governor this summer, citing the financial toll of ongoing ethics complaints, and was replaced by Sean Parnell.

Parnell's office has asked the attorney general for an extension from the current Nov. 30 deadline. The request came after Jones said the documents wouldn't be ready.

Higgins said her request, filed on Sept. 22, 2008, involves the review of about 21,000 documents.

In the request, Higgins sought Palin's schedules and calendars between Jan. 1, 2007, and Sept. 15, 2008. Democrats also sought various categories of e-mails for about the same time period, including:

- All e-mails between Palin and state Rep. John Coghill, R-North Pole, or between Palin and state Sen. Fred Dyson, R-Eagle River, with the words "abortion" or "AGIA," which is short for the Alaska Gasline Inducement Act.

- All e-mails from Palin containing the words including: baby sitter, childcare, McCain, Obama, Democrat, Huckabee, Wal-Mart, Eskimo, Natives, Kuwait, passport.

- All e-mails between Palin and her husband, Todd, with any of the following words: vote, veto, budget, oil, Monegan or Wooten.

- All e-mails between Palin and her sister, Molly McCann, with the words Wooten or Monegan.

Palin fired Walt Monegan, a former Anchorage police chief, in July 2008. State lawmakers launched an investigation to determine if Palin dismissed Monegan because he would not fire the governor's ex-brother-in-law, Alaska State Trooper Mike Wooten, who was involved in a messy custody battle with Palin's sister.

Is it the Public that is waiting or the Liberal Media is waiting or is the Alaska Democratic Party that is waiting?

I know that I am not waiting.

From the AP story it seems to indicate that the Alaskan Public is asking for the emails. I would say that it is misleading but that would be true for about 95% of what is published in newspapers these days.

I'm not waiting either......I do find it interesting that so many changes have cropped up in the Palin family. I will say this though, a year to publish them, seems a bit shadey.

OOOOOOHHHH look, I can see Cuba from my office!

That's the trouble with the ease and speed of e-mail commo. Multiply it X 10, or 100, once 'twitter' gets in there. It creates such a HUGE volume of correspondence. Kind of a nightmare, as far as public records are concerned, I'd imagine. And the possiblity of interpretive error increases similarly, I'm sure, as people abreviate and use other shortcuts.

Who gives a flying you-know-what? The less ink and less attention Palin gets, the faster she'll disappear.

Let's release the email records between Obama and Jeremiah Wright or Bill Ayers while he was serving in the Illinois Senate and US Senate. No, wait, dems don't want to so we wont.

They should include all emails containing the words “photo shoot” also and provide attachments.

It is way to easy to pull emails with certain words in them. The state has the proper people and the technology to do it. Someone is just stalling it all off. Playing a game.

"Let's release the email records between Obama and Jeremiah Wright or Bill Ayers while he was serving in the Illinois Senate and US Senate."

Why don't you file a request then? I know it is easier to be a blowhard and make assumptions... but why don't you actually put your time and effort into it? Imagine how cool you would look when you blow the lid off that amazing story!

I find it surprising you think any emails actually exist though. Seriously? Why would he email either of those people? I'm guessing a small part of you thinks there will be emails to the governments of Hawaii and Kenya to 'keep it on the down-low'... right?

Again... instead of pointing fingers maybe spend the time actually trying to put some proof behind your accusations?

Of course it is much easy to just *assume* impropriety. Same deal with the Palin emails.

Except in that case there is the HUGE red-flag of actively circumventing the state-monitored email system. I would say that is analogous to having a pay-as-you-go Wal-Mart phone in addition to a regular cell phone. If you don't think that is suspicious... I don't know what to say.

The AP ignored the ACORN scandal. For those of you with your heads in the sand ACORN got exposed as the criminal organization that it is. And yes, ACORN got Barry elected.
This is just a weak diversion. AP, you suck.

Any possibility that the demand for email copies had anything to do with Palin resigning early? Why the foot dragging? Recovering and transmitting recorded emails is not rocket science and could be accomplished within a relatively short time span. These are public property and are required to be shared by legal demand.

The “controversy” is not if he is a citizen, but a natural born citizen.

I got one, how about we find out why a birth announcement was placed in a local paper within days of his birth. Yeah in This Country and being born in this country

Are the birth’er now claiming time travel is possible? Are they saying Barry had special marking to assuring him a chance at the presidency. Oh wait facts aren’t important as long as we bash Obama good!

I am Lord roadtrip and I have a large sum of money sitting in a bank in Kenya. You see the monarchy was disbanded and I was forced to leave in a hurry. I have the proper account numbers and I have the authority to transfer funds but the new govt has restricted the flow of cash going out of the country. With some help I could transfer funds to the accounts of other helpful individuals and they could legally withdraw the funds. Of course I would give a percentage of money to anyone helping me. The person must be inteligent and trust worthy so I have decided to extend this offer to those who continualy make disparaging coments about Palin. We Kenyans don't like her either.

"The AP ignored the ACORN scandal."

This scandal or the start of it seems to been picked up by media around October 2008, this the same with liberal and conservative.

AP and other outlets did ran stories, like this one

“ACORN board: No lawsuit over embezzlement claim AP Online October 20, 2008 MICHAEL KUNZELMAN”

Media accounts about Acorn are out there and despite what some think its been covered by a variety of news sources.
