McCain says Palin remains strong force in the GOP

Published Sunday, October 11, 2009

WASHINGTON - Sen. John McCain says Sarah Palin remains a formidable force in the Republican Party despite widespread criticisms of his 2008 running mate.

McCain says he still has great affection for the former Alaska governor.

One of McCain's top advisers from his presidential campaign has said Palin would be a catastrophe for the GOP if she's the party's presidential nominee in 2012.

McCain says tensions are to be expected among campaign officials during and after a tough election.

The Arizona senator says he's happy to have good Republicans eying the 2012 presidential race and says "Sarah is one of them."

McCain spoke on CNN's "State of the Union."

By the time that election comes around, Obama will be running for savior of the universe and any Republican will begin to look good. Somehow I don't think Palin will be running 2012, she has her goal set on becoming an ever present persona and ex presidents are like old race horses that are put out to pasture and forgotten. She has a game plan and so far people have not been able to figure it out. Will be interesting to see what she says after the book release.

Didn't we just have this discussion?
Anyway McCain is just saying that she REMAINS a central figure in American politics. Maybe that will change and maybe it won't. She has done a good job of positioning herself as the antichrist for those of you who worship our curent leader. But more importantly she represents a focal point for people who fear Barry. Arguing about how lame Palin may or may not be is irrelevant at this point. Wait a year or two to see if this country is still floundering around. If Barry gets the new taxes and regulations that he wants this country will be in seious trouble. And then even I will have a shot at being president.

In part, I have to agree with Henry (I must be feverish?!).

I don't like Obama one bit, and the more he says and does, the more I dislike him.

But hoping he fails at everything he does, in some circumstances anyway, probably does not bode well for the future of our nation.

I don't like the way he's going about turning around our economy, I think it's going to do a significant amount of damage to the strength of our nation. That being said, I certainly don't want him to fail to turn our economy around or strengthen our nation.

As someone said earlier today, let's be careful what we wish for, because we might just get our wish as well as all of the ramifications that go with it.

Here's a more complete version of what McCain said:

"Will Sarah and I -- did we always agree on everything in the past? Will we in the future? No. But look let's let a thousand flowers bloom. Let's come up with a winning combination the next time. We -- and -- and let's -- let's all go through the process, rather than condemning anybody's chances. And I'm happy to say we have some great people out there, and Sarah is one of them."

Someone pointed out the following (certainly I didn't know this - & the person who pointed it out didn't think too highly of it):
"McCain said he wanted to 'let a thousand flowers bloom' next election cycle....the exact quote is 'let a thousand flowers bloom, let a thousand schools of thought contend.' This was the slogan for the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution led by Mao Tse-tung..."

There you go, folks. Go crazy!

"The alternate domination of one faction over another, sharpened by the spirit of revenge, natural to party dissension, which in different ages and countries has perpetrated the most horrid enormities, is itself a frightful despotism. But this leads at length to a more formal and permanent despotism. The disorders and miseries which result gradually incline the minds of men to seek security and repose in the absolute power of an individual; and sooner or later the chief of some prevailing faction, more able or more fortunate than his competitors, turns this disposition to the purposes of his own elevation, on the ruins of public liberty.

Without looking forward to an extremity of this kind (which nevertheless ought not to be entirely out of sight), the common and continual mischiefs of the spirit of party are sufficient to make it the interest and duty of a wise people to discourage and restrain it.

It serves always to distract the public councils and enfeeble the public administration. It agitates the community with ill-founded jealousies and false alarms, kindles the animosity of one part against another, foments occasionally riot and insurrection. It opens the door to foreign influence and corruption, which finds a facilitated access to the government itself through the channels of party passions. Thus the policy and the will of one country are subjected to the policy and will of another.

There is an opinion that parties in free countries are useful checks upon the administration of the government and serve to keep alive the spirit of liberty. This within certain limits is probably true; and in governments of a monarchical cast, patriotism may look with indulgence, if not with favor, upon the spirit of party. But in those of the popular character, in governments purely elective, it is a spirit not to be encouraged. From their natural tendency, it is certain there will always be enough of that spirit for every salutary purpose. And there being constant danger of excess, the effort ought to be by force of public opinion, to mitigate and assuage it. A fire not to be quenched, it demands a uniform vigilance to prevent its bursting into a flame, lest, instead of warming, it should consume."

the balls in obamas court as far as the next presidential election is concerned. if he stops campaigning and starts producing he could, likely, look forward to a second term. if he can't get it together, at least he will have a healthy retirement pension to look forward to. on the other side, if the republicans can't get it together, they will, probably be displaced by a strong third party challenge. if that happens, obama could survive and capture a second term. do i think that palin will be a candidate? probably not, but she will play a role.

I always cruise the Palin articles to read the bottom feeder lib lines.

It's simple. The Liberals of today are the great-great grandsons and daughters of the Tories---you know, the colonists who were loyal to King George during the Revolution? They are still looking for a King to take their money and tell them what to do and how to do it, still yearning for someone to place on a pedestal and adore, like a human replacement for God in their lives.

Just listen to them rave on about King Obama and know who they are.

WHO has kept the creepy surveillance-without-a-cause networks in place? And KEPT the equally creepy special authorities for himself? WHO made "detention" into "permanent detention"? Well, here's a hint, it WASN'T BUSH!!! It was and is Obama.

And while you're at it, suppose you tell me why he has spent over $2 million to suppress release of his birth certificate? Two million and you say there's nothing wrong? Right.

Like most Americans, I gave Obama a chance. And then there were the bailouts and the stimulus and GM and health care reform. I stopped giving him a chance the day he suggested that our soldiers pay for their own wounds and health care because they "volunteered"? Would you rather pay the going rate for professional mercenaries, Mr. Obama? Then they could afford to pay for top notch care and insurance for their families instead of a standard issue coffin and a flag.

The guy is either evil or incompetent and either way, there's something really, really wrong with him. If it were a choice between him and Sarah Palin, I'd probably jump off a bridge, so I am personally hoping it never comes to that. The intellectual "descendants" of the Tories have no necessary biological lineage to Tories of the past. It is a mentality, a "meme" instead of a "gene" thing, wherein the liberal assumptions of today follow the monarchist assumptions of former times. It used to be the royals and the commoners and now, for them, it's the haves and the have nots. In either case, they look for a greater external and temporal authority (rather than God) to rule over their lives---a king, a dictator, a Fuehrer---and they conceive of classes of people, instead of individuals. The twisted part is that liberals and statists often take Christian concepts of sharing and humility and charity and use those human virtues to undermine those who display them, shamelessly encouraging others to give up their money and their time in the service of the "king"---the government. Make no mistake that these lines of thought and those who consciously or unconsciously espouse them are dangerous to civil liberty of all kinds and are, by their very nature, irresponsible and immoral.

They are referring to the way Liberal/Statists relate to political leaders. Conservatives for the most part have God in their lives and don't mistake men for God---a common mistake of the humanist ego one finds among Statists. They believe that Man is the be all and end all, and wind up worshipping other people---politicians, celebrities, football stars, whatever. This is why I know NO conservatives who kept photos of George W. Bush or had Bush coffee cups or Bush statues riding on the dash boards of their cars, but I know all sorts of liberal statists who have Obama's picture hanging in their living rooms, Obama campaign buttons still on their coats, Obama sayings on their memo boards, posters of Obama, Obama lunch boxes, Obama coffee cups, and yes, little plastic Obama statues---just like the old plastic Jesus statues---riding on the dashboards of their cars. Myself? I am thinking of buying some Obama toilet paper, a 100 different photos of His O -ness, 1000 sheets per roll, for $6.95. So you think Liberals and Statists (is that even a word? come on now) don't have god in their life in one form or another? I have yet to come across anyone who proclaimed themselves to be Liberal or Moderate think of the President in those terms. Seems only the Conservative think of him that way?

I see plenty of worship photos of Bush Sr. Ronald Regan and Sarah Palin in offices about town, I have yet to see one office with a picture of Carter, Clinton or Obama on the wall. Maybe it's the places I frequent, IDK... but the most I have seen regarding Obama is election related. I still see Kerry 2004 and Bush/Cheney stickers on cars, so I don't think it qualifies as a form of hero-worship.

I'm sorry but the only ones I have seen worshiping politicians has been the "Right-wingers", particularly so with our ex-governor. It creeps me out just as much as it would if I heard anyone praising the president as "The Anointed One", "Messiah" or any of the other deification's you guys use.

It really bugs me. Politicians are not idols, even Wilson, Kennedy and Regan should not be made idols of. Every bit of hero worship I have heard (and I don't just mean the titles) has come from the Right-wing, and they already have a reputation for being fanatically religious.

Republicans never questioned the cost of both wars and attacked the Democrats who did as being unpatriotic and against the troops. Now the Republicans question the cost of health care. That makes them for killing and not for healing . They are being unpatriotic and against the American people. More people die every year,in the range of 45,000, because they don't have health insurance. That's a lot more than in both wars. That again makes them for killing and not healing. They had 8 years of total control to fix the health care insurance problem and reform health care. It doesn't matter who they run to many many Americans.

Your memory is short. The donks took over congress in 2006. Bush had only veto power, thereafter. Yet, the donks funded the war (including Obama) on every vote. No conviction there, eh?

Why? You libs are just afraid you'll be voted out if you all have it your way. You libs wait till conservatives agree with you so you can blame it on the other side as well. You libs won this election by blaming Bush, without any specific ideas except to bail this country out. Proof? Obama has no idea what he's going to do on health care, on the war, economy, abortion, so he's just going to take it allover with the Government. Bush created this mess by having the biggest government in the history, and all you libs have to solve is making the government even bigger.

    leftorright,

There is one thing I will say I do like about President Obama, and that is that he knows what the office of the president is actually supposed to do. You say he "has no idea what he's going to do on..." but in reality, issues such as the healthcare debate are NOT dictated to congress by the president! Believe it or not, Congress are the ones who are supposed to come up with things. A president can support an issue, ask congress to come up with something and basically try to put his political omph behind it, but he (or she) is not supposed to hand out legislation to his party to pass, or issue presidential decrees creating law (like we've had some trouble with before). The man is doing exactly what presidents are supposed to do, and furthermore he is actually working hard at things (rather than vacationing in Crawford 2/3rds of the time). At most a president can sit with congress and try to suggest things, but it's not really the intent behind the office... except in maybe working on the yearly budget I think.

You may not agree with his ideology or what he supports, has signed into law, etc... but you have to admit he is doing the job correctly.

Isanova, I agree he's doing the job correctly. Ain't breaking any rules and all. I voted for him, mainly cause I wanted the republicans to wake up cause their ideology is to have small government, yet these last 8 years they couldn't control spending. Obama has great ideas and I wish most of his ideas could easily be passed, but money doesn't grow out of the trees. OK, do you really want him to pass everyone of his ideas? Ouch. Were looking at $15-16 trillion dollar debt by 2012, way more than white house is predicting.

The more time has passed, the more convinced I have become that she is a fraud and, not only was she bad for Alaska, but would be horrible as a national leader. Fortunately, she has shown her colors for all to see, and thus, I think she is probably one of the most unelectable persons that would ever aspire to a national office.

Intrigued by what "rogue" actually means, I consulted the Oxford English Dictionary. Here are the definitions (http://dictionary.oed.com/cgi/entry/5020...) :

    1) One belonging to a class of idle vagrants or vagabonds.
    2) A dishonest, unprincipled person.
    3) One who is of a mischievous disposition.
    4) An inferior plant among seedlings.
5a) An elephant driven away, or living apart, from the herd, and of a savage or destructive disposition.
5b) Any large wild animal of a similar character.
    6) A horse which is inclined to shirk its work on the race-course or in the hunting field.
7a) An inexplicably aberrant result or phenomenon.
7b) Something that is inexplicably faulty or defective.
7c) That which lacks appropriate control; something which is irresponsible or undisciplined.

Corporate greed has turned us all into robots for the rich. The rich work us for their own needs and then discard us when we become unproductive. Well, no more. It is time for us to take back the money they have stolen.

Now the fat cat, good old boys are squirming now under President Obama, and that is good. But it is only a good start. We need free universal health care for all. For to long the rich have enjoyed the benefits of us working for them. Now they will work for us. If they don't like it, to bad.

We need to stop the literal striping of this planet's resources so a select few can live in luxury. We need to stop acting like the earth and everything on it belongs to us, it does not. We pump oil out of the earth to turn to fuel so our jets can drop bombs on it. We turn that oil into pollution that is killing us and we kill everyone who stands in between us and that oil. We are worse then crack addicts when it comes to that stuff.

Obama, god bless him, is doing his best to set things right after what Bush and Cheney did to us. Idiots like Palin and her supporters can't see beyond there own small little lives. Obama is working for us, and I still believe in him!

Whatever her vices or virtues, Sarah Palin has put herself in an unlikely position to ever pursue higher office than the one she vacated. I think all this speculation about her "future" is unwarranted. She'll be a gadfly and stomp around in support of conservative causes, and maybe over the next ten to fifteen years she will grow up enough to hold a responsible position. Until then....this is much ado about nothing. There's no way she could capture the Republican nomination for either President or Vice-President as a voluntarily unseated Governor.

    Palin is dumb, dumb, dumb.

And the recession is over. I heard it on the news. People are spending again.,People have to spend, it is inevitable. If you want something you have to buy it and that takes money. The stimulus created almost a trillion dollars and it is going to be spent. I know that this is a complicated issue so I hope that I haven't confused those of you that are unfamiliar with how the economy works, but trust me, the recession is over.

Jimp..... my liberal friend..... you may not like sarah....... but millions do (including myself.) I have conserative roots just like her. She is the exact leader that America needs right now. Heck with Bush, Obama, McCain, Clintons and all the other horrible leaders. Sarah is a fresh face with the desire to lead. She is anti abortion, pro guns and anti gay marriage. All very good traints to have in a leader. She is not for National Healthcare like Obama. She lowered Alaskas debt and put more money into the states rainy day account. Now even liberals admitted she did do that. Plus, she has pre sold millions of books. If she was really a bad leader, why would people spend their hard earned dollars on a book from a worthless leader? As far as the economy..... banks are only making profits because we bailed them out. People are continuing to lose their jobs. More foreclosures are accuring because of this and that will hurt the banks even more. Plus talks about national healthcare? Higher taxes on businesses and insurance companies? Do you honestly believe these are the ways to fix our economy? To screw over the average joe? If you do, your such a fool and extremely ignorant as well. I would never wish any of that upon my friends and family, not even you my liberal friend!

Roadtrip knows jmailman!! He might be a damn liberal, but he sure knows when a little recession is over!

Ok, enough of that. Jmailman, when Sarah ran for governor of our Great State, she ran on the platform of taking on the big guy, the big corps. She did that. Did a damn fine job of it. She had also told us of how she believed in God and was anti-abortion, but that she was but one voice in Alaska. She was a "live and let live" Alaskan....much as we all are. We are by majority very conservative, but VERY open to others and their opinions and beliefs. So, Sarah goes along for the first 18 months of her term...fighting for REGULAR Alaskans...her fellow Alaskans. Along comes John McCain. A man that I respect over many, many other Americans. A man I hold dear along with any other vet that has been a POW. My eyes tear up when I think of the atrocities that they endured to serve their Nation with pride. God Bless each and every one of them!! He chose her to be his number 2 in the Presidential race. All of a sudden, everything changed. She immediately took the line of Sean Hannity and Rush Lamebrain and allowed herself to be protrayed as the savior of the religious right. This is not the person we elected. She lost every bit of my support, and more importantly she lost my respect as a fellow Alaskan. I hope this explains my view of what happened and I think it is a view shared by many fellow Alaskans.

Its perfectly fine that you comment on here, and that you like Sarah, but you just don't "live" our life. Most politicians think they are above us while Palin just fits right in with us. Thats the kind of president we need. The Clinton administration, Bush administration and now Obama administration think us Americans are too stupid to understand anything. As far as debt goes, I would say you should not. Your senators get a LARGE sum of pork barrel spending money than almost any other state. There again..... OP, I was too busy working for the man to comment on the market till now. The stock markets eclipse of 10,000 proves that Bush's recession is now over and Obama ended it. Without the stimulus package it is entirely possible that the world would have ended. Thanks to the trillion dollars of spending money that Obama gave us the economy is back on track. Simply put, people are spending again. I am sure that the market will continue to climb as more and more people realize this. And as Obama eliminates more wasteful military spending and Bush's good old boy corporate welfare programs things will only improve.

The country will be so tired of all of the strife and bitterness by 2012, and in such financial straights with all of the proposed new health and energy follies foisted upon us, that it wont matter hardly at all who the GOP puts up. If the Democrats pass some version of Obamacare created in a back room political maneuver, against the wishes of the majority of Americans there will be a backlash for the ages. The loss of jobs resulting from Obama policies will increase the already historically high unemployment rate. Throw in Cap and Trade to create more lost jobs.

As for BHO's foreign policy, what is it? I have no idea, except that he seems to like to befriend despots.

Republicans can screw things up so bad that the Democrats sweep to victory, as they recently did. Then the country remembers why Democrats should never be in charge of anything larger than a rock concert, and puts Republicans back in.

I don't look for Palin to emerge. Contrary to some wishes, she is not Reagan in a skirt. More like a conservative Nancy Pelosi. I mean that in a negative way.

It's a couple of years down the line, and lots can change. It might be somebody that we hardly know now. That young fellow down in Florida is drawing interest.

No. As long as they make him look bad they don't care who gets hurt.

Are they scared that if Republicans don't agree with them they might have to take all the blame? Are they scared of being voted out in 2010 or 2012? Are they scared that Obama's policies are bad? Come on Dems your in power. Quit waiting on Republicans to agree with you. Republicans had their chance the last 8 years. It's your turn. Let's see what you got.

also, i never asked republican politicians to drop what they believe. i just suggested obtaining bipartisan support on issues is a good thing, and you're fairly naive to think otherwise.

also, i never wished failure on sarah. if you can actually find evidence of me doing so, feel free to share it. i did say i thought she was a buffoon who has no place in political office. that's different.

I will credit the biggest thing that Obama gets right. When he told our youth that "dropping out of school is no longer acceptable", I cheered for him. I still do. He's frighteningly weak on foreign policy and instinctively fascist on our economy, therefore, if he's going to break our country's bank, I think that he should break it on inspiring young adults with education. Thankfully he did not. He was the single worst danger to our freedoms that our Nation has ever seen. That's known as projection. Your worst fears were simply your own.

Ron Paul is the only member of the Congress who voted "No" to re-authorize the Civil Rights Act. That probably forever disqualifies him from being taken seriously as a national candidate. Besides, he is not a republican, he's a libertarian. He should run on his own ticket, not another's. I find him as dishonest and flaky as Cynthia McKinney, especially regarding earmarks to his own district. Well, at least she put her own life at risk when delivering supplies to Hamas. BTW, he used a made-up quote when he attacked Huckabee during the campaign. He should have corrected this because he wrongfully slammed religious, patriotic Americans. The correct quote is "When fascism comes to America, it will be called anti-fascism." Maybe he is smart enough to know that he could throw out a mis-quote and his sycophants would eat it up without looking to see on what they're supping.
