Work was never such a good time

FAIRBANKS — Need an excuse to get out of the house tonight, but don’t want to be obvious about your intentions? Since Fairbanks lacks a bar called The Library or some other “decoy” establishment, well, just tell that significant other, “I’m going to Work,” and leave before those quizzical looks begin.
And it won’t exactly be a lie.
Work, formed from the remaining of three-quarters of This Door to Remain Closed During Work Hours, performs with Paper Scissors, 9 p.m. at the UAF Pub. The show is free.
Band founder Caleb Kuntz explained that “straggler” Eric Lonn rounds out the quartet, and plays keyboards and “a decrepit” Magic Touch Organ from the 1960s or ‘70s.
“We’ll probably be throwing both a Korg keyboard and Magic Touch Organ on stage this go (and) see what magic spurts about,” Kuntz said.
Kuntz added that Work’s general musical direction loosely follows an instrumental indie/post-rock sound, but emphasizes catchy-ness and crowd interaction by incorporating clapping, whistling, counting and whatever else might get people involved with the happenings on stage.
“I’ve always thought that to be the biggest set-back for an instrumental band; getting the crowd involved past just ‘listening’ to the music,” he said. “(We) make a more interactive environment for the audience ya know?”
Kuntz said This Door to Remain Closed During Work Hours was known for their epic jams pushing greater than 18 minutes. In an effort to be more relevant and listenable, he said Work has condensed the songs down to a near-pop time-scope of three and a half- to five-minutes.
This is the band’s first show since May, and Kuntz said the timing is perfect for Work’s musical revival.
“Everyone in the band is finding their sonic capabilities and it feels like we’re capitalizing on all accords,” he said. “Now we just need to work more on the visual elements.”
