Vote for liberty

Published Wednesday, October 21, 2009

This race is about elitism versus populism. If you don’t trust the people to tell the government how to govern us and you want to abdicate the responsibility to a few that claim to be “experienced” and “capable” to make decisions we are incapable of making for ourselves — vote for the Obama, Whitaker, Hutchison, Hopkins ilk. You deserve the government you get and the enormous debt that comes with it.

If, on the other hand, you want lower taxes, less government usurpation of your rights, your freedom and your liberty, vote for the only candidate that even grasps these concepts. Those that have faith in the decency of the common man instinctively know to vote for Tammie.

Honestly...does this person really think the borough government has much control over our "freedom and liberty"? High-flying rhetoric like this has no place in a local race; it should be about common-sense solutions to local problems.

"Honestly...does this person really think the borough government has much control over our "freedom and liberty"?"

Taking more money from taxpayers than is needed and wasting it is irresponsible.

When that money can lead to people being thrown off their land for not paying, and is at obscene levels, it most certainly does affect freedom and liberty.

As a general rule: the increase of government is usually met with an increase in taxes and a decrease in liberties--government telling you what to do.

If you want higher taxes and Luke Hopkins and the borough assembly telling you what to do and interferring with your property rights, then vote him. Be a serf to the political establishment. Your common sense solutions come with a price and a bunch of rules.

"Elitism vs. populism"? Hardly. Try "facts vs. feelings", "brain vs. gut", or "analysis vs. intuition". In each case, the former consistently yields better results. Vote for Luke.

If you're someone seeking to get something out of government then, yes, you'll get your best yield from Luke while rest of us pay.

I'll be voting for Hopkins if only to defy the lack of reason expressed in this letter.

"If you don’t trust the people to tell the government how to govern us and you want to abdicate the responsibility to a few that claim to be “experienced” and “capable” to make decisions we are incapable of making for ourselves — vote for the Obama, Whitaker, Hutchison, Hopkins ilk."

Sooo...um, Maria? Does that mean that we all get to make up (or break up) the borough ordinances ourselves? Yippee! That'll be fun!

Of course, as anyone knows who has ever served on a committee, coming to a consensus might be difficult... On the one hand, you'll have the group who will want to conduct business in an orderly fashion, paying mind to that pesky budget nonsense and all that other silly stuff vs. those who'll want to eradicate the Assessment, Planning, Land Management and other non-essential departments within the borough, whose employees who just sit around on their hands all the day long and eat up our tax money... We don't need their ILK. It'll be challenging, but boy, you know how resourceful the common man is - plus, as EVERYone knows, the populists are the ONLY true patriots... so... there ya go.

    Q. How can Wilson lower our taxes?
    A. She can't. The mayor doesn't have that power. The Assembly sets the mil rate and adopts tax ordinances as it sees fit.

    Q. How can Wilson prevent the "usurpation" of our rights, freedom or liberty?
    A. Unclear. I personally don't feel that my rights, freedom or liberty have been usurped, but that's just me. I tend NOT to be paranoid, so I'm ok with voting for people to represent me, and keeping an eye on what they do by attending borough meetings, listening to them on the radio, or reading the minutes of the meetings. If something disturbs me, I write or call them, or attend the next meeting.

Tea parties aside, there are ways to be an involved citizen. We don't have to elect people who promise things that aren't practical, responsible or even possible.

    (R) & (D) are both responsible for - almost colluding - to increase the reach of govt at *all* levels. Higher taxes inevitably follow.

e.g. How about a sales tax? No. How about a sales tax? No. How about a sales tax? No. ad nauseum.

Do you want big government or astonishly huge ginormous govt? Those are the choices you get. Of course if you vote (L) for less govt, that's "throwing your vote away".

In reality, voting (R) or (D) is the real waste of your vote and meets the insanity test: Keep doing the same thing and expect a different result.

A (R) or a (D) will win and it won't make any significant difference where your liberty is concerned.

A plague on both your houses.

Elitism vs. populism? Seriously? Not even close. This race is turning into Common Sense (Luke) vs. Radical Zealotry (Tammie).

I have no real problem with Tammie. It's her supporters--especially the vocal ones, like the author of this letter--who I have a problem with. Hopkins is not Obama. Hopkins is not Whitaker. Hopkins is not Begich. Hopkins is not an EVILCOMMIELIBTARDTREEHUGGERGREENIEDEM!

Hopkins will NOT be confiscating or banning woodstoves.
Hopkins will NOT be taxing you out of house and home.
Hopkins will NOT be needlessly growing government.
Hopkins will NOT be "usurping your rights."

Hopkins WILL be a good steward of your tax dollars. He knows how to manage a budget, how to manage a staff, how to organize people to get stuff done.

    Wilson does not.

I will vote for Tammie Wilson in the Nov 3, 09 runoff. I think Luke Hopkins is a nice man, but I have not agreed with some of his votes on the Borough Assembly. I am a conservative and I agree with Tammie's conservative positions.

Also Tammie has demonstrated tremendous energy and dedication in studying about the many Borough issues. Long before she got elected to the Borough Assembly she very regularly attended the Borough Assembly meetings in the audience. I observed that she also often attended Fairbanks City Council meetings, even though she is not a city resident.
On occasion I have asked her to explain some detail about a Borough issue to me. She is very knowledgeable.

I must say however, that in the October 6 election, I voted for Garry Hutchison for Borough Mayor. Tammie was my 2nd choice. On Election Day I held a sign supporting Garry Hutchison on a street corner. I supported Garry because I have observed him for many years when he used to be on the Borough Assembly. He had an excellent conservative voting record. He is a very good man and would have done a good job as mayor.
I am now happy to vote for Tammie. She will make a great mayor and will be very accessible to the people. She has proven that quality. For a long time, every week, she has been coming on as a guest on the radio call-in talk show ("Problem Corner"-KFAR). Tammie enjoys talking to people and is not afraid to tackle the tough issues.

Let's face it: a vote for Hopkins is a vote for the good old boys and the "same old stuff", an continuation for Whitaker's policies. More & larger government interfering in more & more aspects of your life. Higher taxes, currently the highest in the State & possibly the 14th highest in the country [U.S.] So if you are a Federal State, City, Borough [including School Board]or University employee, you will vote for the "same old stuff" & Hopkins. Unless you're a "free thinker" or the other part of the population in this community you will vote for Wilson & all that she says she stands for. Unfortunately there is more of the first group
than the second, so the vote will go for Hopkins, the good boys & the "same old stuff"!

You're damn straight I don't trust PEOPLE like Tammie Wilson to govern me...
and I certainly don't trust the more ignorant people of North Pole, Salcha, Fox etc. to be the ones calling the shots in my local government...can't you people mind your own business instead of trying to crap up this entire borough??

Will you people read what you have written? Why is it that if you disagree with someone, or if they live in a certain area, they are ignorant? I am so tired of you people bickering over who is destroying the city, nation, way of life, or whatever.

I firmly believe in free speech, and realize you all have the right to post what you have posted. Let me clue you in. Stop being blowhards. State and defend your opinions, debate facts, please! This is important to do! Stop the name calling and profiling. Both right and left, liberal and conservative, religious and non-religious.

If you want me to vote for Tammie, tell me why I should vote for her. If you want me to vote for Luke, tell me why I should vote for him. I've heard all the reasons not to vote for both of them. Try a positive spin for once.

Thank you for the comments regarding Garry's prior service to this Borough. I do wonder sometimes why people like Maria keep lumping Garry in with Obama and calling him names like "elitist" just because he was qualified to be Mayor. The son of a mechanic and a secretary is hardly an elitist, so your comments are refreshing and most welcome.

I agree with longhornak - give reasons to vote for the candidates, instead of calling the other candidate names. Calling names only indicates to me, that no one knows of any good reason to vote for their candidate.

    Here's to the positive!!

I'm seeing a "Vote for Tammie she's not Obama" which is very similar to "Vote for Obama he's not Bush"

In either case I'd rather hear about her stand on issues than her disagreement with someone else.

Stupid is as stupid does, on either side of the isle.
