Candidate positions

To the editor:
I would like to thank the Daily News-Miner for the recent articles about the two candidates running for borough mayor. I look forward to future articles from either the Daily News-Miner or the candidates themselves to learn more about the candidates’ qualifications and their positions on each aspect of borough government — parks and recreation, the library, the bus system and our schools.
I would like to hear what each candidate thinks can be done to further economic development and jobs and to support our local tourist industry and whether they believe the mayor or borough should help facilitate in these areas. I would like to hear their positions on how the borough should work or not work to reach out to all members of our community, including the University of Alaska, the Native groups, the business groups, the military community and those who would prefer a growing government or a minimalist government.
I also am interested in the candidates’ views on how the mayor should interact with our Interior delegation, our Alaska delegation and with other communities within our state.
As a nonpartisan voter, I am interested in each of the mayoral candidates’ qualifications and philosophies. It is disconcerting to me to see people turning our local non-partisan election into a partisan race. It is true that people who belong to political parties tend to vote for a person just because they are of the same political party.
I will choose the candidate I think has the best qualifications, and I urge other voters, regardless of party affiliation, to do the same. The future of our borough is in your hands.
