Lt. Col. David Bauer presented Cristine Kaufman, daughter of Jeff and Jackie Kaufman of North Pole, with a United States Military Academy crest on Aug. 21 to wear on her Marion Military Institute uniform. The pin is a gift in conjunction with Kaufman’s West Point Association of Graduates one-year scholarship to MMI. She is enrolled in the junior college’s Service Academy Prep program.

Jennifar Ribar, a 2006 graduate of Monroe High School, was granted a summer internship at Harvard University Medical School, which she just completed. She assisted in AIDS research in a lab setting. Ribar will graduate from Adam State University in Colorado in the spring and will attend medical school in fall 2010. She is the daughter of Joseph and Lynn Ribar.

David M. Nicholson, of North Pole, has been named to the summer 2009 dean’s list at Missouri State University. Students must be enrolled in at least six credit hours and maintain a GPA of 3.5 or higher to make the list.

Alina L. Evans, a 2001 graduate of Monroe High School, recently complete a one-year veterinary internship to Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge and has been awarded a Fullbright scholarship to study biology in Norway. She is the daughter of Melinda Evans, of Fairbanks.

Army National Guard member Mitchell Alexander completed basic combat training at Fort Benning, Ga., and is assigned to the Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland as a 63B-all wheel mechanic.
He is the son of Gregory and Laverne Alexander, of Fairbanks.

Pvt. Clifford Alexander IV has completed his Army basic training at Fort Sill, Okla., and is stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas.
He is the son of Clifford Alexander III, of Minto, and Tammy Nollner, of Fairbanks.
