Palin talks U.S.-China relations in speech in Asia

HONG KONG - Months after abruptly resigning as Alaska's governor, Sarah Palin resurfaced in Hong Kong more moderate in tone and better versed in international affairs, possibly laying the first brick for a 2012 White House bid.

In her first overseas speech Wednesday, the former vice presidential candidate touched on a wide range of issues - from financial markets and Afghanistan to China-U.S. relations and health care - before a room packed with more than a thousand investors and bankers at an annual investment conference.

"I'm going to call it like I see it, and I will share with you candidly a view right from Main Street, Main Street U.S.A.," Palin said, according to a video of part of the speech obtained by The Associated Press. "And how perhaps my view of Main Street ... how that affects you and your business."

While she displayed some of her trademark folksy charm, the fireworks from her debut speech at the Republican National Convention last year were apparently missing. So, too, was the sharp partisan edge of the politician who toured the country as Sen. John McCain's running mate. She appeared more moderate, did not attack President Obama directly and avoided any major gaffes, attendees said.

"She has learned and grown from the election," said Melvin Goode, New York-based consultant who said he'd carried out some political polling for President Barack Obama in the past. "She was more level headed. ... She didn't criticize. I was waiting to see if she said anything derogatory about Obama, and she didn't."

The speech was closed to all media by the event's organizer, brokerage CLSA, which paid Palin an undisclosed fee that was rumored to be in the low six figures. The AP reviewed contents of her speech from accounts such as interviews with attendees and video footage.

After the AP reported on the speech, CLSA sent an e-mail to the AP threatening legal action about releasing any contents of Palin's address. Palin herself later posted a transcript of the speech on her Facebook page.

During her address, Palin argued for smaller government, calling for lower taxes and a private-sector solution to health care. She contended many average Americans were uncomfortable with health care reforms that infringe on private enterprise.

She criticized the U.S. Federal Reserve's massive intervention in the economy over the last year, according to one attendee, who declined to be named because he didn't want to be seen as speaking on behalf of his company. Praising the conservative economic policies of former U.S. President Ronald Reagan and former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, she gave a general defense of capitalist systems.

"She was careful not to be over-critical ... but she said she saw the fiscal situation is going out of control," said Gregory Lesko, managing director of New York-based Deltec Asset Management.

It marked Palin's first major appearance since she abruptly resigned her post as governor in July, and the speech's location and international scope are seen as steps toward strengthening her credentials ahead of a possible bid for the presidency in 2012.

On Thursday, Palin deflected questions about her political ambitions.

"You know, I wish I could predict the future, cannot, so can't answer that question right now, but look forward to more opportunities to send good messages from the U.S., and hopefully help meet some of the challenges that we're all facing today," Palin told the AP shortly before her departure from Hong Kong.

While she's thought to be considering a run, her Hong Kong trip bore no political overtones, said Fred Malek, a friend and Palin adviser.

"You can read a lot of things into it, 'Is she trying to burnish her foreign policy credentials?' and the like. But really, it's a trip that will be beneficial to her knowledge base and will defray some legal and other bills that she has," Malek said.

Wednesday's speech marked her first trip to Asia, and she used the occasion to discuss China's relationship with the U.S.

Palin said she believes the U.S. has a role to play in helping China define its future, while emphasizing that Washington will always push for greater freedom there. She urged China to become a responsible member of the global community and help bring a resolution to pressing problems related to Afghanistan, North Korea and other trouble spots.

In an apparent reference to renewed tensions between minority Muslim Uighurs and members of China's Han majority that have led to violent riots, Palin suggested Beijing's continuing ethnic problems showed it was hard pressed to handle regional problems, according to another attendee.

Too little of an apology too late. The Newsminer editor forgot he is writing for a newspaper and not a blog. I was highly offended by his remarks and will remain a newspaper unsubscriber. From Instapundit: --- HONG KONG READER SEAN GIEFING WRITES: “I attended Sarah Palin’s speech at the CLSA conference in Hong Kong. She was very engaging – very down to earth, likeable and offered very intelligent and well informed opinions on US domestic and foreign policy and interesting views on China. If you were looking for a slick nuanced presentation you were likely disappointed. If you were looking for a real person with common sense views and practical ideas you left thinking, why couldn’t we have more people like that in leadership positions. Hopefully we will.”

The USA is the greatest country in the world for many reasons; one being that we will never vote Sarah Palin as president. The only reason she wants to run is because she likes the adulation. She doesn't like the work that comes along with it.

She's gone from governor of Alaska to giving secret speeches to reps of big money in Asia? She barred the press from her speech. When in Communist China, act like a Communist Chinese. :-) I especially don't trust politicians who keep secrets regarding their relationships and positions on international trade and/or other immense issues. What didn't she want the public to know about what she said to the big money in Asia?

The only reason I'm even interested in the former half-time governor is that big money could buy her the presidency in 2012, a thought that sends shudders of fear through my very being. Stranger things have happened. The Shrub and his Dick got in and helped instigate two trillion-dollar wars (making money hand over fist for Dick and his pals), and spearheaded the war on the Constitution with the Patriot Act and its followers. Dick Cheney had secret meetings with big money too, only his were with the dirty energy people.

Contrast that with the speeches and appearances made by Obama and we should all be freightened. During difficult years, these demands apply to everyone, regardless of class or age. For the first time, we want to build and leave behind us a Nation that is strong economically, intellectually, and spiritually, a nation in which a confident and proud people may live.
It is obvious that the younger generation must be included in this community. The younger generation will accept the cause with open hearts. At our last congress meeting, for example, we gave our youth groups tasks of serving the community, in addition to their paid jobs.
A few months later, we made another appeal to the honor of our young girls and boys, calling them to join the youth working for social welfare and health care.

What happens in Hong Kong stays in Hong Kong?

I am not a friend or fan, but the former governor CAN/MIGHT recover from her gaffs. Look, if Nixon could be politically rehabilitated, why not the stumbling former governor of Alaska? From what I have seen, any college graduate who studies the current geopolitical economic climate could have made that speech, with its glittering generalities, moderate criticism, and some light weight insights which are the grist of every TV news mill from FOX to CNBC. She sprinkled it with real-world insights which are uniquely Sarah. Good for her! I think she has better coaches and better focus that she had a year ago. I say give her some time. She is no longer our governor, which is good, and she deserves a shot at the title (whatever that is).

I would not vote for her, but I think loving or hating a politician is a bit strong. Certainly hearing politicians and weighing what they have to say, minus the toxic jabs, enriches us all.

Snarky is a snarky does. We are fortunate she has moved on. That's enough.

Glock, as usual, your comments are completely incomprehensible.

Look, I think that it's clear that Palin delivers a decent speech, especially to her base, and especially if it was not written by her, as is the case with this speech:

"While the address was a private speech for a business audience, Ms. Palin drafted Randy Scheunemann, the top foreign-policy adviser to her 2008 running mate, John McCain, to craft the speech. Other contributors to the speech included Kim Daniels, an attorney for a religious-freedom group; Steve Biegun, a former Bush administration aide; and Dan Blumenthal of the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative think tank."
    http://online.wsj.com/article/SB12536805...

That SarahPAC deal was the smartest thing Ms. Palin ever did... But even with speechwriters:

"In Hong Kong, CLSA, the Hong Kong-based investment bank, has had a habit of making its annual conferences controversial, inviting speakers who have gone on to the national and international stage. Some of the audience were there as though it were a freak show, expecting the gaffe-prone former Alaska governor to display her ignorance of the world beyond her own isolated state. Others were expecting some verbal fireworks, some very straight speaking to explain why the event was not only closed to the media but delegates were warned not to record her speech. Her handlers carefully didn’t expose her to the press in an open press conference although she did take a few questions from investors.

What they got was 90 minutes of boredom which had half the audience fiddling endlessly with their Blackberries. Ninety percent of her speech could have been – and probably was – written for a domestic US audience receptive to her "mom and pop" populism. Indeed the only newsworthy aspect of the speech was why her remarks had to be kept private despite their predictability.

..."She clearly felt that her audience of fund managers and investment bankers needed to learn from her numerous achievements as (until she resigned) governor of Alaska. And an international audience needed reminding of the dangers of Islamic terrorism. Lee Kuan Yew was quoted on the importance of winning in Afghanistan and the need to send as many troops there as the military asked for."
    http://www.asiasentinel.com/index.php?op...

But Palin will see her foray into international speech-making as a major victory, and no doubt, she will continue to take her show on the road, much to the delight of her many fans and her accountant.

    An apology to Sarah Palin
The Daily News-Miner has had its agreements and disagreements with now-former Gov. Sarah Palin at various points during her time serving the state of Alaska. We have tried to maintain respect for the office of governor and to be generally civil when discussing Mrs. Palin, her policies and the actions she took while serving as governor. The same has been true for the time since she left office.
Today I must apologize to Mrs. Palin personally and on behalf of the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner for the choice of words used on the bottom of Wednesday’s front page regarding her speaking engagement in Hong Kong this week to a group of global investors.
We used offensive language — “A broad in Asia” — above a small photograph of the former governor to direct readers inside the newspaper to a full story of her Hong Kong appearance.
There can be no argument that our use of the word “broad” is anything but offensive. To use this word to describe someone of the stature of the former governor — who is also the former vice presidential nominee of the Republican Party — only adds to the anger that many people appropriately feel.
It wasn’t all that long ago that I wrote a column highly critical of Mrs. Palin for not agreeing to meet again with the editorial board of the Daily News-Miner. I used forceful language to explain my belief about why she would not meet with the editorial board. I did so, however, with civil language. It was a tough column; many people didn’t like it, though many others did. I bring up that column as a way of noting that there is a right way to disagree, a proper way to treat people.
There’s widespread belief that too much meanness exists in political discourse today. The media, already held in low regard, need to be extremely wary of that meanness slopping over into their own work. I am responsible for the content of this newspaper and need to ensure that our employees adhere to acceptable standards of decency.
I will say it clearly again now: We made a terrible mistake.
Mrs. Palin, please accept this apology from the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner.
And please accept it from me.
I also apologize to our readers, many of whom have been devoted to this newspaper for years and who deserve better.
Rod Boyce is managing editor of the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner
