Palin finishes memoir; 'Going Rogue,' out Nov. 17

NEW YORK - That was fast.

Sarah Palin, the former Alaska governor and Republican vice presidential candidate, has finished her memoir just four months after the book deal was announced, and the release date has been moved up from the spring to Nov. 17, her publisher said.

"Governor Palin has been unbelievably conscientious and hands-on at every stage, investing herself deeply and passionately in this project," said Jonathan Burnham, publisher of Harper. "It's her words, her life, and it's all there in full and fascinating detail."

Palin's book, her first, will be 400 pages, said Burnham, who called the fall "the best possible time for a major book of this kind."

The book now has a title, one fitting for a public figure known for the unexpected - "Going Rogue: An American Life."

Harper, an imprint of HarperCollins, has commissioned a huge first printing of 1.5 million copies. Sen. Ted Kennedy's "True Compass," published by Twelve soon after his Aug. 25 death, also had a 1.5 million first printing.

As with the Kennedy book, the digital edition of Palin's memoir will not be released at the same time as the hardcover. "Going Rogue" will not be available as an e-book until Dec. 26 because "we want to maximize hardcover sales over the holidays," Harper spokeswoman Tina Andreadis said Monday.

Publishers have been concerned that e-books, rapidly becoming more popular, might take away sales from hardcover editions, which are more expensive.

Palin, who abruptly resigned as Alaska governor over the summer with more than a year left in her first term, has been an object of fascination since Sen. John McCain, the Republican presidential candidate in 2008, chose her as his running mate, making an instant celebrity out of a once-obscure public official.

During last year's campaign, pundits questioned whether Palin hurt McCain's presidential bid by "going rogue," or defying his campaign's control.

Although Democrat Barack Obama easily won the election and Palin was criticized even by some Republicans for being inexperienced, she remains a favorite among conservatives and is a rumored contender for 2012. Interest in her is so high that a fan recently paid $63,500 to have dinner with her, part of an Internet auction for a charity that aids wounded veterans.

Palin, 45, spent weeks in San Diego shortly after leaving office and worked on the manuscript with collaborator Lynn Vincent, a person close to her said. She was joined in San Diego by her family and her top aide, Meghan Stapleton, then spent several days in New York working around the clock with editors at Harper, said the person, who wasn't authorized to comment and asked not to be identified.

Glenn Beck is already foaming at the mouth. Can't wait for the "big, controversial bombshell" this book will no doubt contain. Something about liberals wanting socialized medicine so they can give heroin to babies, or something else she completely made up. Here come the flat-earthers:

Here is what the then Governor said this spring:

"There have been so many things written and said through mainstream media that have not been accurate, and it will be nice through an unfiltered forum to get to speak truthfully about who we are and what we stand for and what Alaska is all about,"

It was presumptuous of her to claim to be able to explain "what Alaska is all about," but maybe the subtitle "An American Life" shows that she's abandoned that ambition.

Bizarre that Palin would use the title of what she claimed Moneghan had done. Why was it a bad thing when it pertained to Monegan but now it's good when it pertains to her? Once again she makes no sense or is just lying yet again. And can anyone tell me how going rogue equals being a major quitter? You couldn't pay me to take a copy of her book. I will wait for Levis' book as I'm sure it will be much more honest and truthful or for anyone else who will write a book that disproves what Palin says in hers. Now that would be a BIG seller.

I liked and agree with the comments about reading Wally Hickel's editorial by Swede09.

John, good on ya for expecting accountability and responsibility from both parties. Your article was very informative and factual---good read. Good points too about JETorres but you should know by now he is all about enabling and defending Palin and bashing our President at every opportunity. He'd probably have heart failure or bite off his tongue before saying anything good about Obama.

Also had to look up going POGUE and this is what I found.Beyond its military use, Pogue is known to be used in civilian circles to describe a person who is in a less than admirable social position to the speaker, someone who poses to be more than they claim to be, or someone who is inept, i.e. marching-band pogue, f.ckin pogue, or just pogue. I would say that is much more appropriate than going rogue in relation to Palin.

I agree with diogenesFBKS, fools and their money will soon part.

I wonder what % of the sales will be right wing talk shows that buy huge quantities and give them away by the ton. This method gets the books espousing their points of view on best seller lists so they can argue their viewpoint is that of the common man. She does have plenty of followers though so this tactic probably isn't necessary. Just curious as to whether they will still do it or not.

Let's face it, folks. Palin's on her way to becoming rich, rich, rich. You've got to be kidding yourself if you don't think *everyone's* going to read this book, or at least try to get their grubby little hands on it.

Mind you, for different motives. The Palinistas need affirmation that The Quitter hasn't quit on them. Sarah Palin is a marvel to behold - to her loyal followers, she's an icon, a symbol. To her loyal followers, it doesn't matter that the pesky particulars of her own life stray so far from her espoused ideals. "Abstinence Only!" yet her own, unwed teenage daughter gets knocked up while living under her roof. "Hold me accountable!" yet she's done all she can to hide her less-than-stellar side in her roles as mom, mayor, and governor.

But she's a rogue, all right. Doesn't play anything by the book. Is *completely* unpredictable. Makes up rules as she goes along, and the entire Alaskan electorate knows this by now.

Love her, or hate her, she'll be around by 2012. And both the Sarah lovers and the Sarah haters will be entranced by every move she makes until then.

Love her or hate her, she *sells* copy. She's a friggin' goldmine. Every media outlet known to humanoids has figured this out by now. Got Palin in the headline? Get lots and lots of website hits. Quite lucrative, dontcha think? Wink, wink.

Sarah sells. Pogue. Rogue. Whatever you want to call her, but the girl knows how to hustle. And anyone interested in making a buck in this wondrous free market economy of ours will just latch themselves onto her gravy train. Kaching, kaching.

Sarah Palin scares me, on my gut level. I'll freely admit as much.

And heck no, I won't do a thing to make her laugh that much more all the way to the bank.

Dobiedude, I think you and I are coming from the same place with respect to her. She's ridiculous, true, but that's if you're using common sense.

Maybe it's not Sarah at all who scares me, but rather, her minions of fanatical devotees. On the face of it, Sarah's just floof, cotton candy, nothing of substance. But those who follow her devoutly, collectively, they are powerful . . . however misguided they might be.

Her magic is simple. At her very core, she's nothing but a cheerleader. But she cheers the song of some very latent yet potent hostility in this country, a song that is just now finding its own true voice. She might, herself, be a total floof. But the people who swear undying allegiance to the platform they believe she supports . . . *that's* the thing to be afraid of. It's the people who support her who would have no qualms whatsoever in ridding the world of people like me - people who would challenge the very essence of what she claims to believe in.

    Heil Hitler.

    Heil Sarah.

She, herself, might not be dangerous. But the convictions of those who believe in her and support her, most definitely are.

Dobieman, don't denigrate her. She's a force to be reckoned with, as much as you might hate to admit that.

She herself is floof. It's the people that believe in her, even now, who must be contended with.

"The Art of War" by Sun Tzu . . .

. . . know your enemy. Know your terrain.

Don't even try to discredit her, Sarah Palin. Just shoot bullet holes in every thing she has to say. But in order to undermine what she has to say, you actually have to read what she has to say.

Buy her book. Or steal it. Or read portions of it online. But read the bul_sh_t that she has to say. And then tear it apart, bit by bit. Undermine every b.s. thing she says - it won't do anything to dissuade her most adamant supporters, but it just might help the less koolaid-drinking among her flock to come to reason.

"The Handmaid's Tale." Margaret Atwood's vision is the "glorious" future Sarah Palin would lead us to.

John - I'm not sure what Tugboat was referring to, but here's a reference to Obama commenting on "victory" in Afghanistan from July 23rd: "President Obama has put securing Afghanistan near the top of his foreign policy agenda, but "victory" in the war-torn country isn't necessarily the United States' goal, he said Thursday in a TV interview.

"I'm always worried about using the word 'victory,' because, you know, it invokes this notion of Emperor Hirohito coming down and signing a surrender to MacArthur," Obama told ABC News.

The enemy facing U.S. and Afghan forces isn't so clearly defined, he explained.

"We're not dealing with nation states at this point. We're concerned with Al Qaeda and the Taliban, Al Qaeda's allies," he said. "So when you have a non-state actor, a shadowy operation like Al Qaeda, our goal is to make sure they can't attack the United States.""
    http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/07/...

    Sounds reasonable to me...

Tugboat, did you happen to catch Defense Secretary Gates on "State of the Union" yesterday? He said this about working with Obama: ""He is very analytical," Gates told CNN Chief National Correspondent John King. "He is very deliberate about the way he goes through things. He wants to understand everything. He delves very deeply into these issues.... I will tell you, I think that the strategy the president put forward in late March, is the first real strategy we have had for Afghanistan since the early 1980s," he told CNN. "And that strategy was more about [the] Soviet Union that it was about Afghanistan."

"On "This Week" with George Stephanopoulos, Gates said "...having the wrong strategy will put even more soldiers at risk" when pressed on whether failing to send more troops will endanger current forces."
    http://thehill.com/homenews/administrati...

As for Ms. Palin's book - I'm sure she'll sell a passel of them. I'm sure that she'll do book signings, where the faithful will line up around the block to shell out their hard-earned money for her sage remarks. And she'll eat it up - grinning and winking her way into their hearts and wallets. Wasn't it W. C. Fields who said, "It's morally wrong to allow a sucker to keep his money"?

Sounds like the publisher worried that Sarah would be old hat by the original release date. Wow, and just in time for the xmas holidays. Won't that be a great present for the wingnuts in your family. I have none left in my family, as they all died, were institutionalized, or came to their senses and became Libs. Might be a good joke present for my old friend the college political science prof. He'd get a good laugh about that. Hey, anything I can do to help make Sarah rich enough so that she will leave Alaska and leave us alone, I'm willing to do it.

She'll be laughing all the way to the bank at the suckers who'd spend their money on a book written about a person who got elected governor of the least populated state in the union by running against an "anybody but..." candidate, and being chosen to run for USVP by a dirty old skirt-chaser who thought she was a hottie. The unwed pregnant teen daughter sent her popularity soaring, and her faithful followers rushing to her defense, when they'd be ripping Obama a new one if HIS teen daughter turned up pregnant. The hypocrisy still astounds me, even after all this time. The woman doesn't say anything when she speaks, so I guess it's a good thing she got help writing a 400 page book. Her speeches and interviews are so funny, the book has got to be a rip-roaring comedy as well as fodder for comedic material for a lifetime. Thanks for the laughs, Sarah.

What's this about collaborators on books? Is it true? Is it true? It is now revealed that the "ghost" collaborator on Obama's "Dreams from My Father" was Obama's neighbor and avowed communist, Bill Ayers (the cofounder of the radical Weather Underground BHO told us he barely knew). I guess he just couldn't get 'er done by himself - even with Michelle's help.

In the end, it seems to have caught up with her.

Bristol made an estimated $300,000 for her cover story in People Magazine when all she did was prove that "abstinence only" sex education doesn't work. Get pregnant as an unwed teen - make hundreds of thousands of dollars. Accidentally impregnate the famous governor's daughter - make a million on a book. Lose the VP election and quit your job as governor - make millions on a book. America at its best!

I'm definitely NOT jealous, but I sure am resentful that these people have made so much money off doing the wrong thing, and that those who work hard, stay in school, don't get pregnant as teens, don't quit their jobs in the middle of them and keep plugging along, never make a extra cent for doing the right thing. THAT'S what irritates me the most in this situation.

I am very jealous of the former Governor. It took me 15 years to conduct the research for my first (and only) book. Then there was the peer review process -- another year or so. Now it's in press. It won't actually come out til next summer sometime, even though I completed it last year, ie 2008. And then, I will make no money from it to speak of.

It comes down to the Market. No one is all that interested in what I have to say, no matter how brilliant it might be (it's not, though I have my moments). But this is 21st century America. People are intrested/obsessed/fascinated by her, for whatever reason.

So I say go for it, Guv. I so wish that I were in your shoes right now, even if I personally have no interest in reading what you (or whoever wrote the book) have to say.

MORONS. You cherry pick the definition of 'rogue' to suit your own biases. In fact, there are many meanings of this French word. Here's just one:

"An elephant that has separated from a herd and roams about alone, in which state it is very savage."

    http://www.dictionary.net/rogue

The title is a reference to her stand against Reudrich, a fellow Republican. Most of you haters have never heard of this, because it happened long before MSNBC and CNN knew who she was...and since you need your 'news' bib-and-spoon style from the television, the events have eluded you.

Palin took a stand against her own party...the Republican party...whose symbol is the ELEPHANT. (See above definition)

All that I can find is that "...going rogue" was a quote from McCain aides at the end of the campaign. Let me know if it clarifies the title in the book, as I've got better things to read.

ArcticWriter, you sound -- well -- suspicious? It took me 11 months to write 300 pages, but I have a full-time job and two small kids at home. Look, what does it matter? This thing is going to go through the roof when it hits the book stores. It may then drop like a rock soon thereafter. Books about Michael Jackson did the same thing this past summer. So, does that say anything about the former Governor, or does it say a whole lot more about the American people?

Just telling it like it is, if you can detest Sean Penn and Hanoi Jane you're capable of detesting Palin, no diff. And you bet I dismiss the fake Palin, no political clout has she earned ethically.

When Palin gets off her gravy train hopefully the last stop isn't Alaska!

Whiner -- "I'd say that's worse than the 'pig in lipstick' thing."

Yep. Finally admitting that Obama directed this at Palin. He lied about this, didn't he?

Bitter old man - I'd explain my post to you but I know you're just being obtuse.

My guess is that they bumped up the release date because her popularity and window of opportunity for big sales are both shrinking. You get it out before Christmas and you have the perfect gift for the hayseeds on your list!

    Bitter old man -

Making a mountain-out-of-a-molehill out of allhaileris putting Palin and an elephant in the same post makes about as much sense as making a mountain-out-of-a-molehill out of the pig-in-lipstick thing.

The fact that you continue to push crap like that is just another sign of your intellectual dishonesty.

    Seriously, Prospector, you know better.

Perhaps I missed it, but I don't see where anyone referenced that 'rogue' was also used by Gov. Palin to malign the reputations of both Trooper Wooten (who I'll grant you didn't need much help in having his reputation degraded) and Walt Monegan (who, by all accounts, was a pretty good guy, ex-navy, well-respected and was caught up in a situation not of his making).

    yawn,....who cares?

Define rogue. Why anyone would proudly equate themself to "going rogue".

    More Palin self-absorbed "drama".

The book has already hit the number one best seller at Barnes and Noble and number 2 on Amazon, and it isn't even out. She must be laughing all they way to the bank. Wonder if they will do a second print even before it goes on the racks for sale.

This book is going to sell faster then flavored condoms in San Francisco, faster then white flags in France, and even faster then Godbama's book sold in Kenia.
