Letters to the Editor
Fresh perspective
Published July 20, 2008
The status quo in state politics isn’t working in protecting the interests and rights of Alaskans. Ninety-nine percent of the time, I can’t even get a lip-service response to queries posed to state legislators, let alone get any sort of concrete answer out of them.
Bag tax
Published July 20, 2008
How about a borough-wide tax of 25 cents for each paper or plastic bag received from stores and restaurants in the borough? The tax proceeds can be applied to property taxpayers, or litter control activities.
Refinery failure
Published July 20, 2008
Does anyone remember when Flint Hills — wholly owned by David & Charles Koch — came to town, promising “100 to 200 million in upgrades” to the refinery?
Energy costs
Published July 20, 2008
Lately I have listened to complaints by residents of this borough with regard to the cost of energy. I have been almost amused at how this population of supposed free marketers, who, traditionally, scream “let the markets decide”, are now, suddenly looking to Uncle Ted or Auntie Sarah to save their behinds
Eight-Mile Lake
Published July 19, 2008
The Alaska Department of Natural Resources is proposing to amend the Tanana Basin Area Plan and convey the land around Eight Mile Lake west of Healy to the Denali Borough as part of the borough’s municipal land entitlement.
Commissioner banter
Published July 19, 2008
As I’ve read the newspaper and online banter about the abrupt replacement of the Commissioner of the Department of Public Safety, I feel compelled to share my view from 14 years “beside” the badge.
Bush’s legacy
Published July 18, 2008
Now that petroleum investments have returned to world class profitability, our favorite rich Texas oilman has finally found his desperately needed legacy. And good thing, too, since the whole “War Hero” thing didn’t pan out so well.
If he could just get all these protected areas drilled and sold on the world market, what a Golden Boy he’d be then!
End of confusion
Published July 18, 2008
North Pole resident Jim Metzger’s letter to the editor on July 14, 2008, plaintively titled “Needs an answer,” demands an immediate response.
Young’s vote
Published July 18, 2008
For those who read the congressional roll call in Monday’s News-Miner and looked over the actions of our representatives in Washington, D.C., an instructive message can be inferred from the vote cast by our sole congressman.
Sad, but true
Published July 17, 2008
Congratulations on the series of the four young boys who are now men. Racism is still alive and well, but is hidden more now than back in the 1960s.
Is it winnable?
Published July 17, 2008
Americans, our sons and daughters, are dying or being maimed, mentally and physically, in Iraq, while here in America, the public and public servants argue over the merits, politics, motivations and ambiguous forecast on the outlook on the war in Iraq.
Kudos News-Miner
Published July 16, 2008
I want to first of all congratulate the News-Miner for having the courage to make the decision to run the series regarding the John Hartman issue.
Presumed innocent?
Published July 16, 2008
Congratulations on printing the well-written series on the Hartman murder case.
Equal opportunity
Published July 16, 2008
I would like to thank Backyard Amusements for participating in the success of our organization’s annual picnic in 2007.
Accountability needed
Published July 15, 2008
Control of collectively owned money corrupts, and the control of almost unlimited collectively owned money corrupts absolutely.
