Cold realities await Gov. Sarah Palin in Alaska

Published Tuesday, November 18, 2008

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Gov. Sarah Palin, heralded by some conservatives as the future of the Republican Party, faces some cold political realities in present-day Alaska.

Within days of the McCain-Palin ticket's defeat earlier this month, the unsuccessful GOP vice presidential nominee capped her tumultuous two months on the campaign trail with a whirlwind series of national media interviews and a headline-grabbing appearance at the Republican Governors Association meeting in Florida.

Now it's back to her day job at the state capital in Juneau.

Palin's state budget proposal is due in a month, with plummeting oil prices slashing Alaska's revenues by billions of dollars.

The 1,700-mile natural gas pipeline she bragged about on the campaign trail - "We began a nearly $40 billion-dollar natural gas pipeline to help lead America to energy independence," she said at the Republican National Convention - is nowhere near being built.

Some hard feelings linger over her administration's initial decision to ignore subpoenas in the investigation of whether she abused her power in firing the public safety commissioner who wouldn't oust her ex-brother-in-law from his job as a state trooper.

"The main focus is going to be on the gas line and on the long-term financial issues," said Democratic state Sen. Bill Wielechowski. "You're going to see really a clampdown on government services."

Uncertain is whether the bipartisanship that existed during Palin's 20 months as governor can survive the heated rhetoric from the presidential campaign and her own political ambitions, with the 44-year-old clearly signaling that she's open to a bid for president in 2012.

The difficult task at hand "provides the governor with a great opportunity to roll up her sleeves and get back to her job," said Kenneth Khachigian, a former adviser to President Ronald Reagan. "She's got four or five election cycles ahead of her where she can do things. She doesn't have to comment on 2012 or 2016. Being a good governor is the best thing she can do right now."

Among the challenges she faces:

THE BUDGET:

Alaska has no income or sales tax, and a huge chunk of its annual revenue - as much as 90 percent - comes from taxes and fees on oil companies. When oil prices soar, as they did this summer, so do the state's coffers: Alaska in the past two years has socked away billions in its already massive savings account.

But that account, the $28 billion Alaska Permanent Fund, sends every Alaskan a dividend each year - this year it was $2,069. So tapping its income to pay for government is considered political suicide, and falling oil prices can put big pressure on state spending.

The governor's chief economist is working on a new revenue forecast, and many lawmakers expect the state to drastically reduce spending on such things as road projects.

THE PIPELINE:

With overwhelming support from Democrats, Palin awarded a license to TransCanada in August to pursue building a pipeline that would carry natural gas from Alaska's North Slope to an existing pipeline network in Alberta.

Although the state granted TransCanada $500 million to plan the pipeline, there's no guarantee it will be built. TransCanada says it won't get financing for the massive project until it has guarantees from oil companies to ship the gas through the pipeline; the oil companies say they won't give such guarantees unless Alaska sets a fixed tax rate on production of the gas, and Palin says she won't approve the rates the oil companies want.

Solving that problem will require not only cooperation from the Legislature, but probably from the oil companies Palin has battled. And her claim to being a national leader on energy issues depends on it.

TROOPERGATE AND THE CAMPAIGN:

The episode - and the media spotlight that resulted from Palin's vice presidential nomination - drew attention to practices that simply can't be ignored.

Palin's administration routinely used private e-mail accounts for state business, circumventing public disclosure laws. "We will undoubtedly address that in some form of legislation," said Democratic Sen. Hollis French, who oversaw the Troopergate investigation.

Lawmakers also said they could hold hearings on, and possibly restrict, Palin's practice of charging the state for her children's travel and taking per diem payments for nights spent in her Wasilla home.

Democratic Rep. Les Gara has - without luck - asked the Alaska State Troopers and the Palin's appointed attorney general to investigate whether the McCain-Palin campaign urged anyone to ignore their subpoenas. Under state law, to "induce a witness to be absent" from an official proceeding to which they've been summoned is second-degree witness tampering.

But even Gara, an outspoken critic of Palin, said he doesn't want such matters preoccupying the government.

"There are much more important things in this state than rehashing Troopergate," Gara said. "We all have to sit down and let bygones be bygones, but it's going to take some conversations."

It's just like you all treated Stevens. Well he's a convicted felon, but he's been good to us, so let's vote him in. Isn't there a law against harboring criminals. Now, I am by no means calling Sarah Palin a criminal. But she said ALOT of untrue, negative things in this campaign and I can not tell my children that she is a good role model!! Just like Stevens lost my respect when he told the Senate that if they didn't vote with him he'd hold it against all of them. Is this how you raise your children?

Having been bitten by the bug of international celebrity, Palin's love of attention is clearly on display. Coupled with Palin's extraordinary hubris, it appears that Alaska is now only a stepping stone for her personal ambitions on the national stage.

It's nice to come to a real Alaskan newspaper with actual Alaskans posting. Anchorage Daily News was bombarded with so many out of state (socialistic-sounding) posters, if one didn't know who Sarah Palin is, they'd swear she was an antichrist.

FYI, does everyone here realize that the Alaskan Independence Party, founded by Joe Vogler is considered by many lower 48ers to be a terrorist organization? Yeah, you betcha! I about died laughing. Any way I for one felt insulted that they had something negative to say about every story published. We here in their eyes are ignoramuses as well as some other unsavory discriptives.

Be aware, that since ADN has pulled the public commentary threads, you may find the Newsminer's unindated with paid political lower 48 posters soon as they start having withdrawal. Fair warning.

The ONLY thing that will save Palin's reputation IS effective government. She got great kudos for the extra money handed to each of us, but, was the long term considered when that was done? Giving away $500 million to Trans just to "investigate" building a pipeline years from now..smart idea? Wouldn't it be more prudent to work with those already set up to accomplish the task? There could be a compromise on the taxes, etc. required here. I know how a Pit Bull thinks, they can be single minded and fixated on what THEY want. Compromise and get the pipeline built..NOW...not 10 years from now.

The public needs to take more interest in how the State money is spent. Look at the online checkbook. Several items caught my eye and need explanations. Since they don't list what the reason is behind the check, it's hard to understand...like Spenard Builders getting a "grant" for over $500k and being put against Environmental Conservation. Over $13 million spent on travel. Many "reimbursement" checks issued to non-employees, etc. Sure need better accountability here.

I liked Governor Palin. I am a democrat that voted for her. I thought that she was a upright kind of girl. But hearing her on the trail, I looked more into her dealings. I do not see ANY minorities (blacks & hispanics) in senior management or department heads within her administration. I am upset that charged the SOA with her travel. What did she do with her money from her and her husband's salaries? How can you promote a young man to leave school and get his HS diploma. Alaska has a high drop out rate. He needs a HS Diploma not a GED. There are limits to a GED unless you continue on to college. How can this young man get a job on the Pipeline? Isn't there a long line of people who have been waiting for an opportunity before him. That is not fair and the hook up/ who you know system is unfair and should not be highlighted! She needs to be multi-cultural and open her eyes to what America is and looks like. That was a major blow to the Republican party. Governor Palin needs a reality check.

jroosterdude has put it quite well. One of the Democrat Party disinformation organs (at least recently), The Associated Press, is simply continuing to run a preemptive campaign against Sarah Palin on behalf of the Democrat Party. This is more proof that the Democrat Party Leadership is very fearful lest we "mere mortals & rednecks in fly over country" might actually learn just how effective Sarah Palin really is against the LIARS in the Democrat Party machine. Since the Democrat Party has morphed, what with the recent inclusion of the Chicago Dirty Tricks Political Machinery vote fraud corps, into the new Chicago Mayor Daley type political opponent lynch mob.

We need only sit back and watch the feigned spasms of "disbelief" by the parrots of Democrat Party disinformation that we who have the temerity to disagree with the self anointed Democrat Party luminaries are "so very stupid/deluded... etc..." As was said at the outset by another poster, time to sit back with the popcorn and enjoy the parade of the "pithed frogs." ;-)

akbearable, as much as I would love to admire our governor, you really hit the nail on the head. Dick Cavett said it recently: "Could the willingness to crown one who seems to have no first language have anything to do with the oft-lamented fact that we seem to be alone among nations in having made the word “intellectual” an insult? (And yet…and yet…we did elect Obama. Surely not despite his brains.)" Cavett went on: "It’s admittedly a rare gift to produce a paragraph in which whole clumps of words could be removed without noticeably affecting the sense, if any."

This is my fear. She is a "nice" lady when she is not doing the bidding of the puppeteers; but I do not want her brand of proud mediocrity to lead anything. Not when others, over the centuries, have aptly demonstrated the ability to govern without being soccer moms, or serving up mooseburger to the delight of the awestruck media, or demonstrating a lack of knowledge about the craft of statesmanship let alone a working knowledge of international politics.

There are rumors she will write a book. I somehow doubt she has it in her lexicon, or her legendary short attention span, to write smartly about those things she actually knows well (energy, beauty pageants, right wing religion). So she will not write a book. It will be written for her. The spin will be similar to the confabulated mish-mash to which we have been treated these last three months. In an effort to make her sound "correct", words will be put in her mouth, not her words, someone else's words -- like her bashing of our president-elect. And people will read it for the same reasons they cannot resist watching a funeral procession -- macabre fascination that the coffin might fall from the hearse.

For all that, I wish the lady well. I hope she runs every few years, though I doubt she will be nominated. I am not confident in her ability to learn without attending numerous campuses. Meanwhile, the lesson goes to the party I usually support (but not this year) -- the GOP -- if they can clean up their act, move to the center (at least), and run people for office who have integrity, and a bit more to offer than "charm school" emptiness.

As someone once said, Republicans tell us government does not work, and then get elected and prove it. So, we go to the alternative party from time to time to remind ourselves that this country's form of government may not be the best, but it is way ahead of whatever is in second place.

The key to sucess is us all believing we have the best state in the union and all support the one we voted for to lead us.

Man, the reason the football team i coached on did so well is because we rallied around each other at practice and game time even though many were different from each other. They are my honest feelings Phil, and I seriously hope that they are at the heart of all of us. If she chooses her own interests instead of our States' and us, then I will readily admit that I was wrong, and that she was ruined by "politics" and ambition. If I was right, I will not say "I told you so", rather breathe a sigh of relief and watch the lipstick wearing pitbull get things done for our State that other politicians have postured about while apparantly lining their pockets. I will bask in the fair tightening of pursestrings, the new jobs in the energy field, the reasonable care of both predator and prey, and the continued rooting out of corruption and greed in our politico. I will revel in the vision of the Alaskan future that allows the freedoms that we have now and the equality and fairness for all that is what this State means to my heart. I will thank her for attending to the changing needs of our brothers and sisters who were here when we got here and to the reasonable regulation of those who would come and make this State their home in the future. These are the reasons that I voted for her initially and these are the things that I look for from her in the future. I trust, at this point, that she will not let any of us down in these or other areas that require thoughtful contemplation, intelligent study, discrminative listening, and fair judgment.

Who else but Palin has replaced Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, and Hilary Clinton, etc.. in being the focus of mass media. Just look at the emotional investment so many of you have placed in a person you do not even know. Two years from now, who knows if she will even run for Governor or even choose to remain in this State. Who knows if she'll even remain in politics. Watch out Katie Couric, Palin would probably draw more news viewers for your station. And we know, that channel would do anything to bring in ratings that Couric hasn't produced. Look what Hilary Clinton did, moved to New York to get elected. The one thing for sure, she has many opportunities ahead of her and she is smart enough to make the right decision for herself.

What she does two years from now is not my point. What she does in the next two weeks is! I disagree FreeDarfur, we probably know her better than 90% of this country's constituents know their Governor, or any other political figure in their States. She, and the media, have seen to that. We have joined her family, met her children, chatted with her in her kitchen and in her living room. Some of us know more about her family right now than we do our own families living in the lower 48. Thus my addressing her as Sarah instead of Madame Governor, which is how I would have addressed her if I didn't know her so well. With knowledge comes expectations. I have them and obviously so do a lot of other people chatting about these days. Just asking that she get back to us on those expectations soon so that we can move forward.

I will say this about Gene Johnson of the AP. He pegged it just right on one thing. The reality awaiting Gov. Palin is in fact that Alaska is cold. My those guys in the lower 48 are smart!

All kidding aside, I don't necesarily agree with his attitude, but he did at least discuss something of substance. A breath of fresh air from what the normal drivel is coming from the AP about her.

hometownboy, NO. Palin received a bachelor of science degree in communications-journalism from the University of Idaho in 1987.

At least L. Murkowski has both economics and Juris Doctor degrees, and is a member of the Alaska Bar Assn.

Yeah, I checked out that video and for real... there is nothing there that couldn't be
done to anyone. Really, most Americans (humans that is) are concerned primarily with
their own smaller world. Etc. I hate the way Lisa Murkowski got in, BUT LISA Murkowski
is intelligent. ALL YOU PALIN SUPPORTERS TRY THIS ONE: RUN LISA RUN, RUN LISA RUN.
I think that will be my new thing: loving a female politician from Alaska who is not, in
anyway that is obvious, an embarrassment. If only Lisa was hotter, I've never seen her
in a bikini. McCain should have picked Murkowski as VP. Maybe God likes her and would
have placed her in office, instead of forsaking Palin. I heard the Palin is pregnant again.
Or maybe that was Angela Jolie. Hard to tell the two apart.

    Well said AlaskaPhil 2X.

With all that I have seen and learned about Palin I don't hold out much hope that Palin won't only do what is good for Palin and hers. She told Stevens to step down, flipped again I'm sure on the chance that he would be elected and when they threw him out she could run. I for one am glad the people have spoken and said an absolute NO!

    hometownboy---

It's telling that you picked all Democrats as role models of honesty integrity, and civility.

What has Scott Kawasaki actually done so far in the legislature? Seems like a nice fellow, but even some of his ads during the campaign were a reach. Particularly that his opponent had contact with the state Republican party, so that meant that she was under their control. Please.

I think that David Guttenberg is an intelligent, honest, civil politician. So I'll give you that one.

Tony Knowles did nothing outstanding as governor. He was adequate at best. He played to his constituency, environmentalists and organized labor. Passed out the perks.

Barack (not Barrack) Obama is, of course, our President Elect, and God bless him. But he is not a saint. It wasn't very nice to make fun of McCain's POW injuries. It wasn't very honest to tell us that he never heard hate from Rev Wright in 20 years of sitting in the pews, or didn't know who William Ayers was. It wasn't very smart or ethical to be so close to Tony Rezko, or the Chicago political machine.

Neither side has the dealership on ethics. Maybe that's what you should teach your kids. It will probably serve them better in their future than teaching them that Democrats are good and Republicans are bad. Or vice versa.

Sarah needs to be held accountable. Any other State employee would be raked over the coals for conducting state business on private email or collecting per diem while at home. I am a female republican and Sarah does NOT represent what I am about. I, for one, would never force(or encourage or tolerate) a kid to drop out of high school. WHAT KIND OF EXAMPLE IS THIS? I am telling you now, if we as her constituents do NOT rein her in, she will make all of this drama with Uncle Ted look like a picnic. Sarah is dangerous and so far, teflon. We need to censure her, fully make her answer for every abuse of power, and STOP being walked on by our elected officials.

Sevenwoman, well-said. Palin can get the job done, but after what we've seen in the past two months, we need to make her walk the line. I am already composing my letter to my constituent.

Sevenwoman got it right!!! We, as Alaskans, had better make sure Sarah realizes that she is being reined in and every decision she makes is being watched and questioned to make sure it is for the benefit of Alaska, not her high and (she thinks) mighty.

I can't believe you Palin lovers and your blind loyalty to someone who doesn't know what she's doing. If history as taught us anything, its supporting blind loyalty to an ambitious zealot with self-serving interests is not a good thing. I'm just grateful that you Palin supporters are a small minority. That statement will be proven when she loses in 2010 - either as senator or governor.

"gloom and doom from the AP once again. Let's just let Sarah have an oportunity to work on these problems before we circle the wagons of failure upon her."

I find it quite amusing that this comment along with similar entries advise us to let poor little Sarah get her bearings and opportunity to be the Governor once again.

At the same time these same folks blame Obama for everything except the flu that killed thousands world wide in 1918. And they know he is going to bring America to the edge of a dictatorship. They just know it. Give that rotten socialist a chance. .......

Do you mean the part about.
    1) having a civilian security force as strong and well funded as our military.
    2) Redistributing wealth.
    3) Bankrupting the coal industry.
    4) National health care

hey all you palin lovers.... why is it you all can not face reality.... over the last several months she has been proven to be a fraud of a politician.... she knows jack about fundamental politics... how you people in alaska elected her does not speak well for the democrats up there..... you guys are going to go through a serious recession of your own very soon... and with the likes of palin running the show i really feel for you.... to think, your economy is so inflated and now your rebate check is in trouble.... and she goes and gives 500 million away for no reason at all.... or i should say a really bad political move..... to hide your heads and not face her incompetance as governor is only going to hurt your state..... when oil was hovering around 140 a barrel your government was rich.... just like with her 150000 shopping extravaganza she spends your money like a kid in a candy store..... now that oil is under 60 a barrel your economy is gonna take a major hit.... and 'alaska' palin is not capable of saving you..... i predict by mid 2009 you will be in a deeper recession than the rest of the US....

get wise.... let the troopergate situation get fired back up and a bi partisan committee eveluate everything and find palin guilty and get rid of her.... she is one mess as a politician...

her ranting and raving after the election only made her look really dumb.... her lashing out at bush for the reason of the loss was kinda the straw that broke the solid conservatives back that run the party.... who she appealed to is not the conservatives that matter.... read what huckabee said of her... he hit the nail on the head....

get wise alsaka before it is to late.... i really fear for your economic life....
