Julie Stricker has been a journalist for nearly 20 years, beginning as a freelance sports, business and feature writer at The Gainesville (Fla.) Sun while earning a journalism degree at the University of Florida. She was an editor in Winter Haven, Fla., for two years before heading to the Far North for a taste of the cold and stints at The Anchorage Times, Anchorage Daily News, Juneau Empire, Seward Phoenix LOG and Kodiak Daily Mirror. Julie has been at the News-Miner since 1994, spending 13 years on the copy desk before moving over to head the paper's Internet division.

She and her husband, Rod, have been running sled dogs for a decade and have 20-plus dogs in their kennel. Julie has completed a few mid-distance races on the runners and hopes to pass on her love of the dogs to her daughter, Edie, who already has her own sled.
