Photo editor Sam Harrel has been at the News-Miner since October 1994. He was hired on as a part-time photo lab technician and moved into staff positions as they came open. Born and raised in Pratt, Kan., Harrel attended the University of Kansas where he received a Bachelors of Science in Journalism with an emphasis in photography. After graduation in 1985, he moved to Kansas City, Mo., where he worked as a freelance photojournalist for various newspapers and the Associated Press wire service. Looking for a change, he moved to Fairbanks in the spring of 1994. When not on assignment for the paper, Harrel enjoys river trips in the summer and camping in the winter.
