We just updated this story. He had only suspended his trek and plans to return tonight to pick up where he left off, according to troopers. I originally wrote that he had "abandoned" the hike but it sounds like that was inaccurate.

If both fail, the tax cap would just remain as it is (unless future Borough Assemblies vote to change it). Prop A and Prop B just call for treating the cap a little differently.

I hope that helps.

Oops. I meant to write in my previous post that roads crews are "sanding" the roads, not "salting" them.

I just got a call back from the state's Department of Transportation and Public Facilities.
Their northern region spokeswoman told me their crews are salting a lot of the state-maintained roads on hills outside of town today. She said the crews are set to switch to their winter schedules this week, which will leave them on call more often than the rest of the year. FYI.

Ann Roberts just called in with the endorsements from the forum (Roberts is secretary for the Interior Taxpayers Association).

The association’s members endorsed Ron Warner, Lloyd Hilling and Jerry Cleworth for Fairbanks City Council, and Doug Wilson, Wayne Swanson, Tammie Wilson and Joshua Lott for Borough Assembly.

The association members present at the forum also chose to oppose a ballot measure from Fairbanks’ city officials that would change scheduling rules related to special elections and to continue pushing for a change to tax-cap laws through the group’s voter initiative, Proposition B on the borough ballot.

twingirl—The weather specialists and emergency managers say that while it's still raining, the heavy stuff is behind us and the new stuff is light enough that it will neither make flooding worse nor stop it from soaking into the ground or flowing down the river. So the river levels are going down even though it might still be raining a little bit. I hope that makes sense.

AKhusky: DOT folks said yesterday it would take somewhere around $15 million to convert Barnette Street alone, a future project — unplanned at this point — that could mean adding a roundabout north of the Chena River. The city said yesterday a conversion on Cushman Street (which has been planned, for 2010) to two-way would take about the same amount on its own, so the whole thing would be about double — and that's my rough figure based on yesterday's conversation — that $15 million figure.

Alaskanlady — Yours is the correct spelling for Cabela's. We've fixed it online.

Also: A few folks have suggested the tax — which seems to be showing up on some people's Netflix bills but not on others — could be some sort of a statewide tax. I just got off the phone with Jerry Burnett, who directs administrative services for the Alaska Department of Revenue. He ruled that option out, saying "the state does not have any taxes that would be applied to Netflix rentals."

More to come.

Ocents: I wrote a quick story for the Internet on Sunday when we learned about the crash. That "short" version included the detail about 25 gallons of fuel. I then rewrote a longer story for today's newspaper and Web site, yet I failed to include the detail in my rewrite. Hope that makes sense.
