Exxon's role in the gas line questioned

Published Monday, August 4, 2008

From R.A. Dillon, the News-Miner's Washington, D.C., correspondent:

House Speaker John Harris sent a letter to TransCanada chief executive Harold Kvisle requesting an explanation of his statement in today's Toronto Globe and Mail that "Nothing goes ahead until Exxon is happy with it."

"It is imperative that this statement be clarified and fully understood immediately. Any implication that ExxonMobil Corporation somehow has 'veto authority' is extremely disconcerting for not only legislators, but for many Alaskans," Harris wrote in the letter.

Harris told Kvisle that the Legislature is still has to appropriate the $500 million in seed money promised in Gov. Sarah Palin's Alaska Gasline Inducement Act.

"As we move forward with your company to provide the inducements outlined in AGIA, it is more important than ever that misunderstandings and miscommunications be avoided," Harris wrote.

With the clock running down toward the Aug. 7 expiration of the special legislative session, it's "critical to make sure everyone fully understands what was meant by this statement," Harris told Kvisle.
