Mt. Redoubt grounded a number of lawmakers planning to catch flights from Anchorage to Alaska's Capital city Monday morning.
After weeks of subtle signs, Redoubt erupted this morning, shutting down some air travel in the state.
About 10 House members, including Rep. Scott Kawasaki, D-Fairbanks, were unable to fly to Juneau this morning.
About 6 senators were also grounded by Redoubt's eruptions.
The absences didn't drive the loss of a quorum in either body during floor sessions this morning.
In addition, the Senate Resources Committee meeting scheduled for this afternoon has been canceled. A committee co-chair and two presenters were unable to fly out of Anchorage.
Resources was set to hear an overview of oil and gas development in federal waters off Alaska's coast, with presentations by:
• John Goll, Alaska Regional Director, U.S. Minerals Management Service;
• Cam Toohey, External Affairs, Shell Alaska;
• Edward Itta, Mayor, North Slope Borough; and
• Layla Hughes, World Wildlife Fund.
