It might be hard to get past today's headlines — Gov. Sarah Palin's attorney general appointment and a widening divide between her and legislative leaders — but the Senate Resources and Finance committees are jointly hearing two presentations on natural gas taxes.
Senate Finance co-chairman Bert Stedman, R-Sitka, said recently the Legislature needs to consider de-coupling Alaska's oil and gas taxes in order to maximize financial return to the state from a potential gas pipeline.
The matter is expected to draw substantial debate. Palin recently said a new look at the state's gas taxes is among items the state should attend to in order to facilitate development of the state's natural gas resources — whatever it takes, she said.
