Senate recount would be up to Stevens if Begich lead holds
Published Tuesday, November 18, 2008
The gap between Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich and Sen. Ted Stevens grew to about three-quarters of one percent in the latest count today.
If the Begich lead holds, Stevens could still get a recount, but the 40-year senator would have to pay for it.
Under state law, the candidate has to pay for a recount if the margin of victory is less than one half of one percent.
At mid-afternoon today, Begich had 47.56 percent, while Stevens had 46.79 percent with about 8,000 votes to be counted.
