Former Fairbanksan takes over as Arizona basketball coach
Published Thursday, October 23, 2008
Mike Dunlap, who is taking over as basketball coach at Arizona, is from Fairbanks. He replaces Lute Olson, who resigned today for health reasons.
Dunlap is a Lathrop graduate and a veteran coach.
Dan Raley, a sports writer at the Seattle P-I, who worked at the News-Miner before the Bob Eley era, wrote on his blog that Dunlap is a “hard-nosed almost militaristic character."
“He's been a head coach at Metro State, winning a pair of Division II national championships and compiling a 248-50 record for the Denver school, and Cal Lutheran. He's been an assistant coach at USC for George Raveling, and at Iowa and Loyola Marymount. He's been an assistant with the Denver Nuggets for George Karl. He's applied unsuccessfully for head coaching jobs at California and Oregon State,” Raley said.

An update from the sports desk: Dunlap decided to remain an assistant coach early Friday, Russ Pennell will be the new head coach for the Arizona basketball team.
