Bartos joins mayor's race

Published Monday, August 17, 2009

Former assembly member Hank Bartos became the sixth candidate for borough mayor today.

A runoff election is likely because the winner needs 40 percent plus one and the candidates are going to be hard-pressed to meet that level. Most likely the strategy will be to finish in the top two and qualify for he runoff.

In the assembly races, whoever gets the most votes wins. The runoff, if needed, will be Nov. 3.

With the filing deadline today, several other candidates have entered the local races.

Daniel S. Osborn filed for Assembly Seat A, while Philip Newton of North Pole filed to run for Seat G against incumbent Mike Musick.

William Stodden also filed for borough mayor.

Sharon McConnell filed for School Board Seat G.

The other candidates for mayor are assembly members Luke Hopkins and Tammie Wilson, former assembly member Garry Hutchison and businessman Charlie Boddy.

Today was the last day on the bench for District Court Judge Winston Burbank.

He plans to continue volunteer work as a national director of the U.S. Figure Skating Association, a nine-member group that sets policy for skating and oversees the various national competitions.

He and his wife, Glenda, have two sons and a daughter and plan to do some traveling.

Their son Baxter Burbank, is a nationally ranked ice dancer. He attends St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia and is studying marketing.

Their daughter Bianca Burbank, is a competitive figure skater who will be a freshman at Miami University in Ohio.

Their son Winston Jr., who just completed a doctorate at UAF in mechanical engineering, has just taken a job with BP in Anchorage.

Burbank was a lawyer for 23 years at Call, Barrett and Burbank in Fairbanks before going on the bench six years ago.

He said he was "absolutely sure" that it was Bill Satterberg who put the fart machine under the distict attorney's chair during a final court proceeding today.

I understand that assistant DA Ben Seekins handled the situation with aplomb.

The school district excluded 60 elementary school kids and 7 in middle and high schools today for not having up-to-date shot records.

Before being allowed to attend school, the kids and their parents need to show that the children are current on vaccinations, which includes the new state requirement for a chickenpox vaccination.

Wow. Hank "Mr. Ethics" Bartos really thinks he has a chance?

On the other hand, Republicans keep sending back Don Young, so why not?

Kind of too bad us taxpayers will have to deal with the expense of a run-off. Candidate forums will be interesting though.
