Driving hazards create problems along Railbelt and beyond
Published Friday, January 16, 2009
Driving conditions are challenging today on the Richardson, Parks, Steese, Elliott, Alaska and Dalton highways, as well as in Fairbanks.
Here is the latest road report from the state Department of Transportation:
Parks Highway: Alaska State Troopers have the highway closed intermittently at MP 220 near Cantwell where a tractor-trailer has overturned. Expect delays over the next few hours.
Please refer to http://511.alaska.gov for updates on the closure.
Travel is difficult to very difficult from MP 241-163 (entrance of Denali National Park-Hurricane Gulch) in this section MP163-196 has heavy snowfall, MP215-225 has extremely high winds and MP231-225 has icy pavement.
Fairbanks and Surrounding Areas: Due to unseasonably warm temperatures the roads in Fairbanks and surrounding areas are extremely slick.
Richardson Highway: Travel Advisory for the Delta area (MP 232-272) is cancelled. A Travel Advisory is still in effect for the Trims area, MP 202-227. Roads are difficult, temperatures are 48 degrees, pavement is wet, black ice, ice glaze and strong winds of 30mph with gusting.
Dalton Highway: Travel is not advised. Travel from MP 28.8-415 (this is the entire Dalton Highway, from the start of the Dalton Highway at MP 28.8 to Deadhorse at MP 415) is difficult due to multiple areas of freezing rain, extremely slick conditions and heavy snowfall with drifting. Visibility is low to zero due to blowing snow.
Alaska Highway: Travel from MP 1362-1422 (Delta to Dot Lake) is difficult. Wet pavement, black ice, ice glaze, 50 degrees and winds. Roads in Tok are extremely slick.

Thanks for listing the name of the area along with the MP. I haven't bothered to memorize the mile markers of every town on every road in Alaska. I never know where the media folks are referring to when they just use mile indicators.
