West Valley students attend inauguration
Published Monday, January 19, 2009
Among the hundreds of Alaskans in Washington, D.C. today for the inauguration festivities there are about 26 West Valley High School students, plus three teachers and additional parent chaperones.
Most of the students used their own money to pay for the trip, which is costing each family about $1,645, said West Valley Principal Shaun Kraska.
The students and parents began planning for the journey in the fall, with assistance from social studies teachers Amy Gallaway, Coby Haas and Heather Damario.
In addition to witnessing the swearing-in ceremony Tuesday, the students have a range of events on the schedule, including attendance at the “Washington Workshops Inaugural Ball” in the Windows Over Washington restaurant.
The trip is under the auspices of the Washington Workshops Foundation, a student educational organization that has set up a six-day series of seminars and programs dealing with American history and government.

Outstanding!
