The presidential letter that Bartlett never read

Published Thursday, January 29, 2009

Every state honors two of its most prominent citizens with statues in the U.S. Capitol.

There you will find likenesses of Robert E. Lee, Andrew Jackson, Robert Fulton, Brigham Young, Will Rogers, George Washington, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Jeannette Rankin and 92 others.

The two Alaskans cast in bronze for their contributions are the late Sen. Ernest Gruening and the late Sen. Bob Bartlett.

A new KUAC documentary about Bartlett is to be broadcast tonight at 9 p.m. on Channel 9 in Fairbanks.

One of the documents that came to light during the research for the project is a letter President Lyndon Johnson wrote that Bartlett never had the chance to see.

I have more on this in my column at http://newsminer.com/news/dermotcole

CHANGING TIMES:This is the last day the Fraternal Order of Eagles will be open on First Avenue. The group is not disbanding, but looking for a new roost.

Gene Hansen, an active member in the organization for 33 years, said the Eagles have been in Fairbanks for almost 104 years and in their current building on First Avenue since 1969.
