Most favored cities

FAVORITE CITIES: The people who want to be mayor of Anchorage have many favorite cities.

Asked to name their three favorite cities, leaving out Anchorage which is at the top of everyone’s list, most of the mayoral candidates said their favorite cities are not in Alaska.

Seattle, Honolulu, Chicago, Rome, Reno and San Francisco ranked high with some of the 11 candidates who answered the question, one of many posed by the Anchorage Daily News in a series.

As far as Alaska cities go, there were a couple of votes for Juneau and Palmer and single votes for Petersburg, Nome, Trapper Creek and Fairbanks.

Paul Kendall, who is listed as unemployed, unaffiliated, independent and revolutionist, voted for Fairbanks. He said he likes the “rugged individualism and love of freedoms” in the Golden Heart City.

KEEPING HOMES: The number of home foreclosures in Fairbanks rose slightly in 2008, while Anchorage and Palmer recorded big increases.

In Fairbanks, there were nine more foreclosures in 2008 than in 2007.

In Anchorage, there were 152 more foreclosures in 2008 than 2007.

•The Alaska Oil and Gas Association has canceled its Wednesday board meeting in Fairbanks, given the uncertainty of the flight schedule.

AOGA intends to reschedule the events in Fairbanks in the fall.
