Fort Wainwright prescribed burn sends up smoke

Published Saturday, May 16, 2009

The smoke over Fairbanks is from a prescribed burn on 2,000 acres of grass and brush on the Fort Wainwright Small Arms Range south of the Richardson Highway, the fire dispatch office says.

About 1,200 acres had been burned by late afternoon. About 20 people are working on or monitoring the fire.

The office passed along the following notice issued April 24. The burn was delayed until this morning when conditions were deemed acceptable. The fire was lit from a helicopter.

The US Army Alaska in cooperation with the Bureau of Land Management Alaska Fire Service will conduct a prescribed burn on the Fort Wainwright Small Arms Range located south of the Richardson Highway.

The project area consists of approximately 2,000 acres of cured grass and brush. The burn will help prevent serious wildfires from occurring as a result of military training activities.

Pending weather conditions and Army training schedules, the burn will occur starting as early as next week.

Fire personnel from the Alaska Fire Service and Fort Wainwright will be on site to execute the burn and to insure the fire remains within the containment area.

Smoke may be visible in and around Fairbanks, Fort Wainwright, North Pole and Eielson AFB but it is not expected to impact surrounding areas.

For more information about the prescribed fire, contact the BLM Alaska Fire Service Dispatch in Fairbanks at 907-356-5554 or the Fire Information Office at the Alaska Fire Service, 907-356-5511.

Saw that on my way out of town today and wondered what was going on. I was getting nervous seeing so much smoke in a column so close to town.

Saw this and figured they were just giving us a chance to get our lungs used to the smoke that's bound to come this summer. Alaska already has about 15 fire burning already

I was wondering what in the world was goin on. So that explains the smoke near town, what about out by Eielson? There was some pretty dense smoke out there too. Could see it from the Steese highway. Did Chena Lakes have a prescribed burn also?

Interesting... I was doing yard work on Saturday and had called to activate my burn permit and was told that "open burns are not permitted" by the Forestry people due to high winds (yes, I actually was attempting to play by their rules). Yet they could still kick off their planned burn?
