Movius writes of pioneer women

•Phyllis Demuth Movius is to sign copies of her new book Saturday at the Material Girls on College Road.

You can pick up a copy of "A Place of Belonging: Five Founding Women of Fairbanks" Saturday at 3065 College Road from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Her book tells about the lives of Ellen Gibson, Dr. Aline Bradley, Jessie Bloom, Margaret Harrais and Mary Lee Davis.

Gibson dreamed of building a hotel in early Fairbanks, while Bradley was one of the first women doctors in Alaska. Bloom was a leader of the Girl Scout movement in Fairbanks, Harrais was a school superintendent and Davis was a writer.

•UAF Professor Terry Chapin is to speak on “Sustainability in a Changing Arctic: Forces for Change and Sustainability Options," Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Room 401 of the Akasofu Building at UAF.
