Draft energy plan supports utility merger
Published Monday, October 19, 2009
•A draft legislative report on energy policy suggests again that merging the six Railbelt utilities is a good idea.
Among the suggestions:
•Consolidate the six existing Railbelt utilities into a single entity for the purpose of planning, financing and building future electrical generation and transmission projects with maximum efficiency.
•Evaluate whether the State of Alaska should help to lower heating fuel prices or smooth out price volatility and if so, how this can be accomplished in a way that minimizes unintended consequences.
•Develop a statewide fuel buying cooperative to cut the costs of heating fuel for Alaskans.
•Ensure the continued viability of Alaska’s largest refinery. State policymakers have suggested various strategies to help sustain the refinery, including possible transfer of ownership to a state corporation and/or breaks in royalty prices paid on state oil used by the refinery. At current oil prices this may not be necessary, but future oil price spikes could threaten the viability of the refinery.
•Support efforts to separate propane from North Slope natural gas and transport it to communities around the state.

How about stop subsidizing the cost of jet fuel on the backs of Alaskans?
No where does it say have the State pay to build a gas pipeline.
when the politicans like ramas and coghill said it was all right to stick it to the alaskans by the refiners do you think anything will get done to solve the problem. the only way to solve it is to vote all politicans out of office.if a politican is talking in my estimation they are lying.
I still haven't seen a logical reason why the State Royalty Crude is going for more money than the other crude in the pipe. One would think that the total cost of crude @ NP would be less than the cost @ Valdez, but I keep hearing that its not. Why?
If the consolidation of the six utilities....or government in general anywhere....led to BETTER, more efficient governance, then One World Government would be a worthy goal. But it does not. As Confucius said, 'the more the King does, the less that is done.' Bigger ain't better people, smart folks have known that for thousands of years.
When are people going to realize that there will never be cheap energy in the interior. Find a grant yourself and put up your own renewable energy is the only way you will ever get cheap energy. There are suggestions in there that recommend doing this for individuals.
No strong, local control, nothing of importance will get done.
A typical government report, do nothing much suggestions, a
"milk toast" sort of thing! Oh well!
