KUAC-TV back on the air

Published Monday, September 21, 2009

KUAC-TV is back on the air, ahead of schedule. The station is going to be testing equipment over the next couple of days, so it won't be on all the time.

At my place 10 miles out of town, the Channel 9 signal is now the strongest of any of the local stations.

KUAC had been off the air since last week, though cable and satellite TV subscribers were still able to get the signal.

If you are not a cable or satellite TV subscriber, make sure to rescan your digital tuner. We'll have to see how many people who were beyond the reach of the old KUAC signal will now be within range.

Many people on Chena Hot Springs Road could not pick up the old KUAC signal. I've heard reports that viewers in Rosie Creek and parts of Chena Hot Springs are now picking up Channel 9.

With the new transmitter, KUAC is switching from UHF Channel 24 to VHF Channel 9, which is where it used to be. The VHF channels have better coverage, the TV people say.

This means you need an antenna that can pick up VHF signals, not just the UHF variety required for Channels 2, 4 and 11.

While watching the old digital KUAC-TV, it only appeared to be on Channel 9, as the nation's TV powers that be did not want to confuse you. It was really Channel 24.

And what you see as Channel 2 is not really Channel 2 and Channel 11 is not really at 11, though Channel 7 is at Channel 7 because the owners had a VHF transmitter that could be converted to digital broadcasting.

Channel 13, for some viewers, is not really at Channel 13, but is a subchannel of 7.

If you are not confused yet, give yourself a gold star.

It may snow a few inches in the hills Tuesday, the National Weather Service says.

We are usually reintroduced to snow, slush and ice in late September, always the most dangerous time of the year on the roads.

Drivers need to switch mental gears and slow down.

The forecasters say that the Upper Koyukuk Valley may be in line for several inches of snow tonight and Tuesday.

They said the biggest challenge in predicting what will happen to the east in the Tanana Valley is the uncertainty about how much moisture will remain in the system.

"The best chance of snow around Fairbanks will likely come Tuesday evening," the forecasters said.

Small pockets of warmer air may keep precipitation in the form of rain.

The summits along the Steese Highway could get several inches of heavy, wet snow, they said.

The borough assembly plans to take up a resolution Thursday approving a new bar on Chena Hot Springs Road near Gettinger's field, with conditions.

The conditions in the resolution are that the pizzeria/bar can not serve alcohol unless pizza is being served and that alcohol sales cease at 2 a.m. daily.

Todd Poage told the borough that alcohol sales would be secondary to the primary purpose of operating a pizzeria.

The resolution, No. 2009-30, is by Nadine Winters, Guy Sattley and Tim Beck.

The resolution states that the assembly will monitor compliance with the conditions for the proposed Rabbit's Foot Pizzeria and Pub, to be located in the unfinished log structure near the road.

Good point. The station will be broadcasting intermittently until Wednesday, according to the KUAC engineer.

Thank you Dermot. I was ill this weekend and LOVE to watch many of Channel 9 offerings, and missed them a great deal this weekend. I'm glad to have them back, and better than ever too!

Snow, average first trace in Fairbanks Sept, 21, first inch of snow Oct. 8, average permanent snow pack Oct. 18. Looks like everything is pretty much average.

DOT issued a Travel Advisory for the Dalton Hiway, MP26 to MP56 (Yukon River) for Snow & Icy conditions. That's basically from Hess Creek to the bridge. And, they are recommending CHAINS for on the bridge! Yep, it's coming.
