Friday at the GOP

Published Monday, February 2, 2009

Just a word of thanks here to the Interior Republicans, who invited me to speak at their lunch this past Friday at the Westmark Hotel. I’m not the best at standing behind a podium, but the folks in the crowd made me feel welcome after just a few minutes.

I brought along assistant managing editor Sam Bishop and columnist Dermot Cole for support — and because Sam and Dermot have many more years of living in Fairbanks than I have. Each of them outdistances my puny sum of 15 years in the area, making them more knowledgeable on some things.

And the three of us have our differences of opinion on some topics, too, so that can make for some interesting and entertaining discussion for a crowd.

The questions on Friday were good and centered largely on how we do our job down here at the Daily News-Miner and how people perceive the newpaper. I’m happy to say that we were warmly received by the GOP audience even though we received some heavy criticism from some Republicans during Gov. Sarah Palin’s campaign for the vice presidency.

People do love to talk about their hometown newspaper, whether they live in Fairbanks or anywhere else across the country. And that was evident on Friday.
