This just in from the Stevens campaign...

SENATOR STEVENS ACCEPTS ENDORSEMENT OF SEAFARERS UNION

Senator Ted Stevens today accepted the 2008 campaign endorsement of the Seafarers International Union, Atlantic, Gulf, Lakes and Inland Waters District/NMU, AFL-CIO. Senator Stevens is seeking re-election to the U.S. Senate this fall.

Senator Stevens said:

“As a former union member, I am honored to receive the endorsement of Seafarers International Union. From blocking efforts to repeal the Jones Act requiring American labor, to supporting job training programs like Alaska Works, to increasing paid family and sick leave benefits, I work hard every day to do what's right for Alaska's working men and women.

“Through federal construction projects around the State – from ports and docks to airports and hospitals – I've been able to put my experience and seniority to work to create thousands of good paying Alaska jobs. I’ve also worked to ensure that even private sector projects, like the Alaska pipeline, use well-trained Alaska labor instead of Outsiders.

“The Seafarers have worked equally hard in helping me promote exploration of ANWR, enact legislation to allow construction of the gas pipeline, and advance the cause of maritime labor. I am proud to have their endorsement and their support in the upcoming election.”
