The IPA Syndrome

Published Friday, October 9, 2009

Let's hope no other brewers join the America IPA rush. There are plenty of choices on the market, and most seem the feel that the more hops the better.
Yes, this is a hoppy beer style (especially the American style as compared with the traditional British style), But American brewers have gone to the extreme.
FYI: IPA is India Pale Ale, a British Ale created in the 1800s that was brewed to be drier (deemed better for hot climates), but with extra hops to help the beer hold up better and survive the extended travel time (via ship) to India where Britain had established a colony.
Most American versions are overly floral, and once that passes the nose, the palate gets socked too.
Deschutes Red Chair IPA, however, has found a balance that will work with those hop lovers out there, and fans of the more traditional style. The Red Chair is very floral, but smooth on the palate with a hint of lingering bitterness. This allows the crystal malts to shine through with a hint of sweetness, but mostly dry character and pleasant "earthy" tones.
It's one of the few IPAs (the other is Sierra Nevada Torpedo IPA) that I can drink with ease and not a hop overload.
