Just send me my gifts via dogsled, please

Published Friday, December 12, 2008

One thing I hate about holiday season is ordering gifts from catalogs and then having to explain to the customer service folks that Fairbanks, Alaska, is actually in the United States.

Even worse, a lot of shippers will try to add all sorts of extra surcharges or insist on shipping only via overnight or Priority Mail. I've seen shipping charges that far exceed the cost of the item itself.

I thought I'd seen just about everything, until press plate superintendent Craig Anderson showed me an invoice for a piece of equipment he had ordered: "Do we need to ship via icebreaker?"

I wonder what that would cost.
