Blog: Offbeat Fairbanks

Welcome to Offbeat Fairbanks

Published Friday, September 26, 2008

My co-worker, Venus Sung, and I have been talking about starting this blog for some time, ever since she came across a link to a Google StreetView photo taken in downtown Fairbanks.

That got us to talking about all the weird and wonderful things Fairbanks has to offer. We live here because Fairbanks is a bit off the beaten path and Fairbanksans, in general, embrace the quirks that come from living in a town 100 miles or so south of the Arctic Circle and far removed from the Outside world, in general.

This was reinforced by a picture sent in by Laurie Lawrence of North Pole this summer of a headless, three-legged moose. She wrote: I have had more fun with this photo. Believe it or not, most people are puzzled and ask what happened to the moose’s head and leg, and others say it’s just plain creepy. The moose was simply scratching his head with his back leg, out of sight of course.

Finally, News-Miner press plate superintendent Craig Anderson walked into the office yesterday with something no Fairbanks first aid kit should be without: duct tape bandages: Heavy-duty bandages that are made of real duct tape with medical grade adhesive.

Why? Who knows. They sound perfect for mushers or snowmachiners who can use them to patch up their sleds or themselves, as need warrants.
