Waterspout recorded in Alaska

Published Sunday, August 9, 2009

I've always told friends in Florida and the Midwest that I'd moved to Alaska because there are no snakes, hurricanes or tornadoes. When I saw this video on weather.com this morning, I thought I might have to start amending my reasons for moving north.

It's a video of a waterspout off Koyuk, taken last week by Dorothy Ivanoff from a Cessna flying nearby. The waterspout dissipated before it reached land, so I can still say I haven't heard of any tornadoes up here, but it's close enough. And being in a little plane that close to one? No thanks.
