On the defensive in the backfield
Published Wednesday, May 14, 2008
It looks like the Grizzlies are trying to sure up their defensive backfield.
The Grizzlies today signed four people who have one of their listed positions in the secondary, while also adding a lineman.
The new Grizz are: DB Daniel Dumas, DB/WR Sydney Dumas, DL/FB Ryan Neely, WR/DB Darrell Perkins and DB Derek Zak
To make way for the new faces, the Grizzlies put defensive back/running back Justin Ferringer on the Long IR and released WR Adrian Perez, Augstine Nepo, DB/LB Rubin Rowles and Josh Uelese
Neely is returning to the club after being released at the start of the month.
Perkins comes to Fairbanks as a castaway from the Corpus Christi Hammerheads. Perkins cought two passes for 26 yards in his time with Corpus Christi.
Zak seems to have played his college ball at Florida Atlantic (I can't imagine there are too many defensive backs out there named Derek Zak, so it seems like a safe bet) and he spent time in the arena game with the Florida Firecats in 2006. Fun fact: during a Florida Atlantic practice in 2004, the Owl's kicker caught a touchdown pass over Zak (according to fauowlsnest.com: http://fausports.proboards25.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=886).
The Dumases were harder to track down. I couldn't find any information on Sydney, but Daniel appears to have played cornerback for Sam Houston State, though the Sam Houston Bearkats (yes, kats with a "k" go figure...) Web site doesn't have stats or rosters from earlier than 2007, so I couldn't really confirm that one.
The most interesting person on his way out is Perez. He was released once before, but that was while he was hurt. He seemed to be back to health these days.
Perez had his best game his first game back from his toublesome hammy, catching 10 passes for 96 yards against the Wild, but that was easily the peak of his production. The next time out, he was found just three times for 24 yards.
I'm going to practice tomorrow to write do a preview for Saturday's game, so I'll hope to have more information for you then.
