IFL playoffs: Grizzlies vs. Ice

Published Sunday, July 19, 2009

End 3Q Grizzlies lead 28-14: Fairbanks coach Sean Ponder signed a 3-year contract extension during halftime. To celebrate the offensive guru's achievement, both offenses took the third quarter off.

The closest either team has come to scoring was when Colorado had third-and-goal on the Fairbanks 1-yard line. Grizzlies defensive lineman Pete Smith recovered a fumble on the next play.

Halftime Grizzlies lead 28-14: The Ice found the end zone 16 seconds into the second quarter and 3 seconds before halftime, but Fairbanks used screen passes to throw Colorado's defense off-kilter and tack on another 14 points of their own, both off touchdown receptions by Smith, who has three so far.

On defense, the Grizzlies have put plenty of pressure on Ice QB Justin Holland. He has thrown to ball to the stands several times.

Colorado was able to pull off a couple of big plays, but they didn't put together a solid, sustained march to the end zone. Both touchdown drives were kept alive by pass interference penalties.

End 1Q Grizzlies lead 14-0: The Grizzlies have used skill, interceptions from Johnell Brown and Daudi White, and luck, running back Denny Kimmel fumbled into the awaiting hands of receiver Keith Smith for a touchdown.
